MK2 cup holder

Post by Sean »

So, anyone done this mod? or know how?
Was thinking I'd much rather a cup holder than have an ashtray.

I think the ashtray/gauge space above the stereo is essentially DIN sized. I've been thinking about fitting one of the cupholder units from a Lupo (there are two types, you'd want the one that fits in a DIN slot and is made up of a cupholder, a coin tray and a small cubbyhole). Not got round to it yet, but I reckon it'd be fairly easy. I think your only potential problems would be the cup/cup-holder interfering with the gearstick and/or the stereo.

It's Number 20 in the illustration here:

It looks almost DIN size. That would be too easy. PLus I'd really like to keep my VDO gauge (standard on GTX). I'm sure some of the vans had smaler cup holders on the side rather than in the centre console. Will have to check with my mate who works for vw commercials.

i'm sure i saw a thing on the caddy forum that people fit a handbrake surround from a polo? that has 2 cupholders behind the handbrake. i'd think that a trip to your local scrappy would probably turn up something similar, not necessarily vw, that was similar.

seen one mk2 that had a mk4 golf cupholder (similar to the one you show, but 2 holders not 1) underneath the stereo

I fitted one in my GTI, it was din sized and had 2 cupholders and a cubbyhole above, cant remember what it was out of, fitted it were the stereo goes then fitted the stereo where the ashtray was, pretty easy job.
I had a short shift on the gears and had also shortened the height of the gearstick, otherwise it would have been a problem.

Looks identical to the Lupo one (probably used in other VWs at the same time).
