Gold '79er

Post by Bonusrocco »

Righty heres a lil thread for my rocco, '79 GLS, I've owned now for two weeks. :newbie:

Image

So far ive only had time to wash it really, tip : dont buy a new project when you have redecorating to finish!! :ire:
I found a couple of mins to fit the new gas lifters which work the bomb. Sinch of job, flip out the circlips with a flat head sd, and swap the lifters one by one. just make sure you keep hold of the washers and circlips cos new ones werent supplied with the lifters. I bought these from SGS derby by the way, and used the cardboard tube they came in to prop the tailgate - as opposed to using my nodder. :vcool:

I'm daydreaming a lot about the possibilities, one idea is to use the gt engine from the polo...

Image

It looks like the engine mounts are different, so maybe not the route I want to take, chopping things up.

I'm waiting for my OZ Turbos to arrive, currently somewhere in Poland....

Back later! cheers

Looks tidy!!!.. A 1.3 GT would only need the drivers side mount moving then you just use 1.3 Mk1 engine mounts :vcool:

Have a look at my build thread for some inspiration.. Ive just put a G40 turbo in my Mk1

Sump clearance is not a worry its about 6inchs higher up than a big block, Drive shafts would need to be 1.3 Mk1
Gearlinkage needs to be 1.3 Mk1 and the guides taking out and abit of grinding on the reverse slot if you want to use the GT box, It would aslo need a top gearbox mount making but you could use a 1.3 mk1 4 speed and it bolts in with the standard 1.3 mounts

Any questions feel free to ask :good:

Cheers for the comments and the inspection Autocad - other than blowing the rocker gasket - shes been good as 'gold'

Ordered my tyres today from camskill - 195/45/r15 Toyo TR1 Proxes

Next on the shopping list - coilovers, anti-roll bar setup, new top mounts.

Any recommendatios?

Some minor revelations...

I have a garage to keep it in now, too small to do any actual work in, so i'm on the lookout for somewhere else, asking around work etc.

I got on with the rocker gasket quite well, big thanks to PeteGti and others who sorted the part number for me.
We got to the meet (a bit late  ) just fine

There was oil on the underside of the bonnet and on the manifold and after cleaning it up I think it looks good. Makes me want to detail the 1600 before doing any kind of engine swap.
Image

I'm slowly aquiring parts for the 256mm brake upgrade, inc master cylinder and servo, and the next stage is setting up the suspension and getting the wheels on.

I'm currently polishing them up a bit, looks like i'm gonna have to get the wet and dry out around the bolts, and get the corrosion off the bolts themselves.

Here a random pic of one of my old golfs, I miss the wooden wheel and the ats classics alot!

Why don't you just grind the towbar off and refit the rest and you have irons to fit the bumper to plus a stiffened back end ????
Maybe I'm missing something here.
Always willing to learn.
