Re: My £66 Charity Case GT
Progress.......
Topped up the sunburn today by fitting new washer jet piping, taking off the plastic grille things behind the jets and cleaning up the washer reservoir.
Took the time to repaint the grilles and de-grease the bonnet area where they fit...
Desperatly need new sound deadening
How the engine looks now...
Only thing keeping the head on is a few head bolts, ready to come off tomorrow so I can clean it up.
2L is fully painted with a new water pump fitted, hope to have it fully built on the stand tomorrow. Need to paint the cam belt covers, alternator brackets and a few more bits I'm probably forgetting.
Also tomorrow I hope to clean up a 90amp alt I got off eBay and fit it.
The rad and cowling is all put together ready, will get a pic tomorrow.

The engine, complete with funky sump design...
Then my camera battery died. Boo!
OK, as of today the head is on, alt is clean but letting the side down. Managed to rip the alt bracket off the 1.6 paint it and fit it to the 2l so now the alt is on too. As is a genuine oil filter.
MK3 Golf rocker and timing belt covers painted too. Made a start on putting my Newmans cam together but got in a ratty with that stupid woodruff key. A job for my mate tomorrow.
Tomorrow will be a trip to VW and coming home to fit the timing belt, get her timed up as best I can and maybe some fun and games with the dizzy shaft. Must paint up the dizzy spacer ring too.
Right, off to put together an engine crane, its gonna be a late one!

Engine crane is together and looking like something from Robocop. Chuffed.
Also am expecting delivery of my lightened flywheel any day soon.
Right, heres the engine, just needs a quick wire brush on the head and a few other touches tarted up...
Newman cam and Kent vernier fitted...
This took me a good 90 mins today, particularly pleased with the outcome...
Definatly has a retro feel and looks like it belongs in an 80s coupe. With a bit of luck will get the inlet manifold painted tonight along with a few other bits I knew I'd forget. Swap is go for friday/saturday weather permitting!

Re: My £66 Charity Case GT
Its oot....
But check this out...
Aww snap! So she's had a swap before then bless her! Lesson learned, don't assume!
The long suffering not seeing what all the fuss is about...
Me stoked as hell!
Finally joining in...
BIG thanks to the legend that is MarkH for coming to the rescue when I called, hope I didn't wake you bud
Chuffed at how "easy" it is to take out an engine, was a little nervous to begin with as its my first swap, wish I had done it years ago now TBH.
Back to work now, no real progress till next weekend

I might be talking out of my bum, but I'm sure I remember someone saying before that even 1.6 engines have 1.8 stamped on them.Risocco wrote:

Easy tiger! That may be a little out of my capability! But you should totally go for it mate, be the finishing touch to your beast and take it to the next level.thebrief_1979 wrote:Coming on very nicely - think I might have to commission you to do mine - fancy a 1.8 t conversion anytime soon ? Re: My £66 Charity Case GT
Couple of hours free today so got round to cutting off the bolt that was holding on the drivers side engine mount. Its all about the small victories...
Chassis mount is looking rough from the fight, will sort ASAP...
Aside from that, just cleaning the bay. Found loads of cavity wax which is always good, will however buy a can and make sure all vunerable bits get some protection. This side is getting there...
This side yet to do...
All good fun

Looking good so far fella, it's a surprise how little holds an engine in place when you take one out for the first time isn't it? Well it was for me!

Cheers mate, yeah it is pretty surprising that its a few nuts and bolts really. It was the simplicity of it that got me, other than the drivers side mount being a bugger obviously!
