Getting the gunky stuff off

Post by Big Bad Baz »

While I was fiddling with the headlamp and other bits and pieces last week, I sat on the kerb and idly started pulling at the front end of the rubber bump strip on the N/S front wing. To my surprise, after hearing tales of heat guns and flamethrowers, the rubber strip peeled off quite easily.

The black gluey gunky stuff underneath, however, didn't. A few minutes with the Mk1 fingernail got a bit more off, but it became clear that doing any more might jeopardise my lucrative nail-varnish modelling contract with Max Factor (because I'm worth it).

Anyway, is heat the answer? Does that lift more of the glue? Or some WD40 trickery?

Tips please, from those who have been there before me.

Muchos gracias.

I'd be careful using the toffee wheel for the glue. Tar remover and a heat gun/wafs hair dryer

you could try a bit of nail varnish remover (bearing in mind your max factor contract, i assume you will have lots of it kicking about) BUT: make sure you test in an inconspicuous area first, and make sure you get all traces of it off afterwards - it may remove paint too!

if you want a safer, but equally as smelly option then try a bit of petrol. you should find some of it in a tank under the rear end of your car. don't smoke while you're doing it though. apparently petrol burns quite well. for that matter, so does nail varnish removerer

I have it on good authority that, despite what you see in the films, petrol is quite reluctant to light when introduced to a naked flame, or fag-end for that matter.

I have a Jerry-can full of the contaminated petrol I drained from the tank when the filler neck rotted and swallowed a big puddle. I keep it in the back bedroom, next to the propane blow-torch.

i got that stuff of with white spirit a rag n lots of elbow grease. its a pain to get off but if u rush it and damage the paint u will be gutted. heat gun speeds up process with the big lumps of glue. word of warning tho a m8 of mine took the rubber did off her rocko n in a week she took it out shoppin n sum inconsiderate sod opened a door onto the unprotected body n dented it. ive kept mine on for that reason.
