Changing gearbox seals

Post by mark1gls »

Can you change the flange seals with the gearbox in the car? I know it will be easier with the gearbox on the bench but is it possible with it in the car.

Were can I get the flange seals from, the gearbox in my Mk1 was out of a MG Montego so not sure what to look for.

I'll upload some photos with gearbox code etc when I get home later.

Thanks in advance

they put vw boxes in montegos? :shocking:

but yer you can do it while the box is in the car, its a bit of a pain but can be done, just get the car as high as you can :)

Don't know if this is of any use to you but according to this the codes are as per line two below.
VW Gear Ratios (originally from the EM Sport webpage, visit them at EM Sport
Codes located at bottom of Bell Housing
Follow this link http://www.maestro.org.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=1727
Go to maria post and click on the scirocco link.
Scirocco's get a mention at the bottom of the page righthand side.
Good luck.

Thanks for all the help so far, So I can change the seals with out removing the gearbox, If only I changes the seals when the car was off the road during the restoration.

I think I was misunderstood saying this

"When I've looked for info about this gearbox the code does not seem to be listed or I can't find it for looking"

I've found the code, (see photo) but the 7R gearbox code does not seem to be listed on a few charts I've looked at, thats what I can't find. :dunno:
