1992 GT2 Project

So I'm finally getting around to dedicating a bit of time, to turn my attention to my GT2 to bring it (hopefully) back to some where near its former glory...

I got the car back in September as a winter runner whilst I was rebuilding/modifying my Audi Coupe's engine (build thread here). It didn't come with an MOT and had been sitting around for a year only being moved around a driveway, but a fresh battery and away she went. I instantly feel in love with it on the way home!

So MOT'd and taxed it did me through until February, it was a tough winter but she made it, only with a lot of help from my work colleagues endlessly adjusting the carbs and idle control setup.
And that's where the story ended, its been sitting in my driveway since, looking pretty sorry for itself until i decided to wash it last Friday, it fired up no bother to my surprise!

So sorted out a garage over the weekend and should hopefully get it there and on stands by the weekend. I've been collecting a lot of bits here and there, got a full rear disc setup off a golf. Got an absolute bargin set of VW Sebring alloys, would have loved BBS's but the Sebring look good and came at a great price! Few other bits and pieces, new ariel, rear view mirror, manual choke kit, K&N filter (although I'm back to the original airbox right now).

Top of my list is defiantly sort out the bodywork, got a few bad spots of rust, the cars had a respray in the past so she looks pretty good, can't afford to get it done professionally so planning on tackling the rust myself. Second on the list has to be a weber, the peirburg is shot, been keeping my eye out on eBay, just need to wait until I can spare the cash. The whole projects going to be on a pretty tight budget, got to keep the gf happy

Here's what she looks like right now, I'll post updates as I get the work done but its defiantly going to be a slow one!




Alloys are the wrong colour and have silly stickers on them, need to be recon'd and get some new centre caps.

All tips on how to treat rust are welcome, never tried it before!

These two seem to be the worst one to treat (long term)

Why? Because they're on the main chassis. The little scab need sorting sooner than later to stop it getting a LOT worse. The big one... you could be in for surgery, depends how far through it goes. Personally I'd be inclined to try and get as much of the rust out with an angle grinder type affair... and at least etch prime it to stop it spreading. Doors can be quite easily changed and sprayed, same with the bonnet (but that one's nowt really... )

Plenty of rust treating stuff on the market (none of which I've used, so I'll let the rust experts fill you in on that one!)

Other than that, it's a tidy looking motor, and yeah... the wheels do look a bit odd, lol. Nowt that the planned refurb won't sort!

I was hoping to avoid changing the doors and bonnet but that seems to be what everyone is saying will be easiet, and that large peice of rust is actually on the door not the chassis.

Thanks for the advice, I suspect I shoud take an angle grinder to it first to inspect how bad bits are and take it from there.

Replace the bonnet?

Unless there is something much worse under the touch up paint, take it back to bare metal, prep it and paint it (although blending can be a problem).

It's the rust at the rear quarter I would be more worried about.

The underside of the bonnet is looking abit rusty, but then its not on show. As for painting it i've got a mate that does my painting for a reasanble cost, the whole thing would be done as theres a few blemishes on it. So taking it back to the metal, how would i go about this? really never done this kind of thing before.

Yup the rear quarter is bad, might need help with that bit.

Quick update, progress is slow! But hopefully should pick up now.

Anyway got the head off, cleaned up all the valves and ground them in again, gave the head a basic skim then painted it. That took a while to build the primmer and paint up, but definatley looks worth it in the end, also did the rocker in wrinkle black and a few other details in black. Then painted the inlet manifold and did my best to tidy up the exhaust manifold.




Still alot of work todo tidying up the bay, was hoping to get the block and gearbox out but struggling to get my hands on an engine hoist, possibly just have to drop and roll it out.




Now the cars on stand I'll need to get the suspension off front and back, paint it then get the new coilovers on and the rear disc setup, thinking about upgrading the fronts too any easy options?

well it's been more than a while since I updated this thread, after selling an A6 I had, I've finally got abit of cash to get the ball rolling again. Long story short alot of things have been sorted, a few things still to do. Getting MoT'd tomorrow then hopefully finally get round to fitting the smaller tyres I wanted and also trying and sort the alloys out with a refurb.

Also ditched the calipers I had and picked up a whole new drum setup.

Another Scirocco for Biggar? Looks good, except that Unipart oil filter! VW oil filters are only about 3 quid from the main dealers!

Yes very busy! not all done yet, got spacers on the front and rear now but susp height will need adjusted once I get skinny tyres back on it.

haha I sorted that a while back, found this in the stock room, genuine filter circa the 80's, older than the car itself!

Your Audi coupe is nice, I had one in the past, good cars.

The blue coupe isn't mine, it was my dads, I liked it so much though I had to get myself one.

Well it passed MoT with no bother, now taxed and fully on the road. Got a few gremlins to iron out before shes good enough to be using every day.

First issue is the rear axle, pretty sure the bush is away on the drivers side, prob just get a normal bush instead of a poly bush, its hard enough as is!

Second issue is the radio wiring, its a mess! can someone point me to a wiring diagram for the radio?

Third is the door strips, need to get the last one removed and then try to get more of the bloody glue off, its difficult to manage without damaging the paint.

If i can get some of these done before the weekend then I may just make volksfling

Heat the strip with a heat gun and it should come off quite easily.
After that it is a bit elbow work with white spirit / turps or a sealant remover.
I have removed all mine plus the bits between the front and rear windows, makes it look cleaner.
I'll do it while Ian is wiring you up to the national grid.
