front coil springs

hello, to all you rocco people,as you can see i am a newbie on here,i have a 1990 scirocco-GT11,i am having problems trying to locate,standard front coil springs,thanks in advance for any info on which springs fit,and where to get them?all the best ,JIM

Hi Jim. Welcome aboard.

I’m afraid I’m not that mechanically minded, so not best placed to advise you on which parts you need, though I’m sure there are others that will come forward with the info you need.

In terms of where to get parts though, if it’s just standard bits you’re after I’d have thought GSF was as good a place to start as any. Check out their website as they might even have a branch near where you live. I’d also recommend that you think about Becoming a subscription member of Scirocco Register as then you can get discounts from all sorts of places, GSF included.

Hello Jim,

All MK2 Sciroccos (except 16v) had the same front springs and as Cpt Custom has stated GSF sell them. You would get a discount from GSF if you are a paid up member as well - bonus!

I bought new front springs last year for my Scala, £18 ish.

Where are you based mate and any pictures of your car?

Injection models had slightly stiffer shorter springs than carbed cars, tho not sure about GT 1.8 carbed ones. 16V models had a stiffer rates still.
GSF or ECP will do springs but be aware some of the cheaper springs can make the car sit up a bit when new.

No, definately only the 16v had lower springs.

Have you tried VW? I bought some new ones a from them couple of years ago without any problems.

Not sure what the condition of your springs is, but it's worth looking at them to see what colour code they are - this relates to the tempering of the spring and are different depending on model of Scirocco. There is usually a small dab of cooured paint on them to denote what they are - you'll need to make sure the new ones are compatible, though Vw should be able to assist if they have your chassis number.

The ones for the 1.6 GT are yellow and green, but I know for a fact that the 1.8 engined cars have a different coding.

I tried the dealer first last year and was told that they only sell the complete struts, as in spring, strut insert etc at £97 plus VAT! There was a member on here last year that got a bargain from his local dealers of some uncollected units that he sanpped up at £50 a side.

No they didn't. The only one that did was the 16v GTX.

Bought mine from the local VW dealer in 2007 - springs were supplied seperately. They had them on back order, but they arrived in a week. Unless they've changed their policy, I'm not sure why the spring can only be bought as a complete strut? As I also bought a new strut and shocks, it was the strut / shock absorber assembly that could only be bought as one unit. All other colour codings were listed for the other models on ETKA.

Stand corrected, 16 v shorter and rated differently but there are different ratings shown on ETKA for non 16v (based on paint colour markings) presumably dependant on weight differences , guessing things like auto box, air con, pas etc.
