Mk1 Rocco/Golf Press Photo

Post by dan95x »

I was given a bit of a cracking pressie yesterday - Bit of Back story is that my Granddad owned a VW main dealers in the Midlands, from the 50s, through till the early 80s - 'Jem of Walsall' in the Pleck, for any of our older members in the area!

He was having a bit of a sort out and came across something he thought I might appreciate - A PR photo that VW sent around all the dealers promoting jointly the Mk1 Golf Gti and MK1 Scirocco Gli, for them to put up in the dealership, as they did with all the vehicles. He was right, I appreciate it, and thought you lot might too:

Image

Words say 'FAST CARS FROM VW - Volkswagens new high performance twins - The Golf GTI and Scirocco GLI. Both have fuel injected engines and will top 113mph. Issued by the PR Dept, Volkswagen (GB) Ltd, Yeomans Drive, Blakelands, Milton Keynes. Tel 0908 679121'

Enjoy!

and interestingly it's a storm in the photo to continue the storm/gli debate as per the dvla thread.

I thought that too - But then was the storm front spoiler available as an optional extra too, as it is not unusual for PR photo cars to be fitted with all optional extras available, so it could be that rather than an actual 'storm' in the picture?

I'm not aware of any other spec mk1's sporting the front air dam as a dealer fit...

Cool pic and story btw

Yes, that's the story I remember - it was somewhere in the south west I think...

My records show it was up for sale late in 2003, hasnt been taxed since then so who knows what became of it would love to know, partly regret not buying it at the time but had rust coming through all over the place where the people who had restored it had just slapped filler over rust :x

Thought you meant the photo at first, not the car!

Shame both of them appear to be dead then really - Imagine the scene tax on a MK1 Golf GTI press car!

If any other rocco gems turn up I will post them, a lot of the stuff he has is aircooled stuff, as the garage was around a lot longer in the aircooled period than once the water cooled stuff came out. He found this while he was trying to find the mk1 scirocco sales brochure he previously found and 'put somewhere safe' for me! His garage is a goldmine (read tip!) of old VW stuff.

Same Rocco without the Golf.

Let's hope some other nuggets of Rocco goodness come out of that collection. Sounds promising.

HVV 503T is a Storm I believe. I have driven it!
I almost purchased it in the early 90s form a chap called Lance who lived in Yeovil.
I didn't buy it as it didn't drive as nicely as the MK 1 GLS I owned at the time.
I believe the car still exists in that area of Somerset.

It's nice to be nice.
