3a lump supercharger

Post by tmcmahon92 »

Hi all, how difficult/ what is needed to supercharge a 3a lump running on a single webber carb. would this be cost effective and where would you recommend getting the manifold from?

cheers in advance

its a monster of a task matey, do it!

the manifold is the least of you worries if its a route you would like to take.
I'm not sure about supercharging a carb'd car. you'll want to go injection.
you'll have to mount the supercharger, which will require alot of measuring, making room, swearing and custom brackets and belts probably
im not familiar with the 3a block but you'll probably have to think about beefing up internals and dropping the compression ratio.
then theres engine management to deal with...

i dont know a massive amount about it tbh, but a mate of mine is in the process of supercharging a polo 16v lump so i keep hearing him moan about various issues with the plan lol.

In all honesty, if forced induction is something your thinking about going turbo is much easier and probably more beneficial to your power output (will also work on the carb head without much fuss)
some of the polo boys get renault 5 turbo carbs and shoe horn them on with a turbo and see very impressive results for very little money. might be worth some research.

anyway, hope my ramblings are of some help :yup:

Would you want to run the carb before or after the supercharger?

As TOM said, the R5 turbo carb would be ideal if you want to do it post charger. if you wanted to use the weber, you'd need to find a way of sealing it. I know weber did do a carb for turbo cars back in the day, it may be worth finding out what the differences would be, it might just be different gaskets?

I would be inclinded to do it this way as i'd expect it would be alot more complicated having the carb before the charger because your trying to compress air with fuel already mixed in it, and then feeding it though whatever series of pipework, into an inlet manifold to the engine. I'm not sure this would perform as well as the fuel may puddle or may even ignite if too much heat is generated? plus I dont think the charger would like fuel inside it?!

sounds exciting though, but you've defo got a few things to think about.

yeah i knew you can do it, a friend of mines got a supercharged classic mini :pilot:
just figured would be more straight forward ( lol ) to go down the injection route, would allow you to use some g60 goodies such as the throttle body and maybe even the engine management, who knows... not i clearly but its just a thought.

I wasn't trying to shoot you down, there - far from it... Just an excuse for a pretty picture!
