Sigh...i think im gonna sell.....

Post by jbo »

Hi all,

I've been pondering this for a while and think i might sell my rocco. What does everyone think it worth -

1988 Mk2 16v GTX import and converted by bell and colvill to rhd. 1 of 10 models. jade green.

The paint work had a not very god respray by the previous owner so it starting to flake. The driver door and bonnet are also rusted and could do with replacing to be honest. The car has bee lowered by chopping the springs so ideally the need to be replaced.

Mileage is 160k, 6 moths tax, 5 months mot

Loaddddsss of paper work including the original import docs.

In the whole year and one month of driving her i have replaced -

head gasket (had the head skimmed and cleaned at the same time) (6 months ago)
new dizzy (4 months ago)
new leads (last week)
new plugs (4 months ago)
oil change (6 months ago)
oil filter (6 months ago)
injectors (3 months ago)
fuel pump (10 months ago)
custom 2.5" straight through exhaust with jetex twin back box (9 months ago)
custom made downpipe (4 months ago)

I know everyone says "its a working project" but it really is. After a decent respray it will be a very nice car! Ive owned 7 roccos and this is by far the best. It truly is quick and the noise of the twin cams through the exhaust really puts a smile on my face every time!

So any idea on price?

After all the time, effort and money you have ploughed into the car why would you want to sell it?
Get it finished and enjoy all your labour.

What else do you need to do?

If it just needs springs, door and bonnet replacing (all relatively cheap) before the respray, it seems odd to get rid of it before you can fully enjoy it.

You'll kick yourself if you see someone else getting the benefit of all your hard work.

Yea i know lol, its just something that keeps going through my head. I figure to get the car how i want including new window seals, springs, brakes respray im looking at about 2-3k. I know that seem a lot but we are talking rolled out the factory sort of pristine lol.

I can prob afford it too if i keep putting a few hundred quid into it each month. The only thing is I want a car I can really have fun with, something i can turbo maybe and i wouldn't dream of defacing this car from what it is.

I probably wouldn't sell it unless someone offered me a silly amount to be honest. Your right ian, ive put literal blood sweat and tears into this. The hours straight ive sat in the snow rebuilding it was not fun ha lol

To be honest fella if it's *only* requires that amount of work you'd be mad to sell it. What are you going to get to replace it and how much will that end up costing, I'd put money on it being about the same.

Everyone has these moments, I'm speaking from experience here. In September I had a gorgeous looking Bandit and at the moment it has a tractor engine, the wiring is everywhere, it' bloody filthy and I;ve already had to pull out of a show.

Got to have faith

The easiest thing to do, that will disuade you... stick it up for sale at the price you want on ebay, with photos of everything you think that needs doing. And wait.

If what I suspect happens. You'll still have your car at the end of it, but feel slightly worse off.

I went through exactly the same situation, and ended up feeling a bit disappointed in the effort I'd put into getting the car to a reasonable roadworthy condition. Not one bite, not even an offer from some bloke offering me a stolen bankers draft and to export the car via his shipping agent.

I decided to bite the bullet. "factory pristine" as you put it. So, each month, I buy summat or do summat that'll get me closer to my goal, whether that's dropping stuff off at the powder coaters, or buying a new engine to replace the head (both things I've done recently!) and chucking a few quid in an extra bank account to go towards a decent spray job. It all helps and mounts up.

I have very nearly got a body shell sitting on axle stands... few things to take out, but I'm nearly finished on deconstruction. From there it's getting stuff ready... and titivating as I go.

I am however in the boat that doesn't mean I need to use the car, so I also don't have to worry about how long it's going to take. Another 2 years should see me finish it I reckon... maybe more. But I don't mind, I'm enjoying doing what I'm doing, the end plan being that I have a shed load of parts that have been fully refurbed / rebuilt / created ready to go onto a gleaming body shell. The reconstruction I reckon will take me a LOT less than 2 years, but I'm doing nothing on the shell itself til that point.

I have been pondering the ol ebay with a very detailed and honest write up. But yes your right I doubt I will get what I want for it, even when it is finished I doubt I will get I want for it. To be fair I never bought the car as a fixer upper to then sell at a profit, I don’t think any of us on here do! Lol.

Again it doesn’t need a huge amount of things doing to finish it off but when I write it all down and guestimate the time it’s going to take it gets a bit over whelming! I have even been looking at part exchanging against other cars on piston heads. The amount of times I almost try and part exchange her for a corrado, go for a drive and change my mind again! Ha lol!

I don’t have to worry about not driving it either, I bought a absolute mint condition mk2 godl tdi a couple of months ago. It’s my least favourite of the veedubs but its damn economical and its grown on me now.

I don’t think I will sell it, I just had a bit of a weak moment talking to my mate who was saying it’s stupid to put any more cash into it. Ha he’s probably right but I don’t want to drive anything else. Plus everything else I’ve driven or owned doesn’t come close to putting that smile on my face!

People like that get my blood boiling. Surely it doesn't matter what kind of car you're into, if you want to spunk money on it why not as long as everything else is taken care of?
Next time he pipes up point out that while you've spent a lot you'll happily pull up against anything you could have bought with the money and still look better getting there. I reckon I could have bought a Cupra outright with what I've spent but I know which I'd rather be in

Lol true, he knows I wont sell it anytime soon and I will keep throwing cash at it. I earn enough to pay my bills, drink beer and fuel my rocco on the weekends. Ohh i know, if I think back to all the cash Ive spent on my old cars it woudl hurt. But yea they look better, theyre more reliable and cheaper to fix!

I have to agree with MR Funk on this one. I've had my Scirocco for fourteen years. I've spunked up a lot of money on it over the years. I'm not into shows, polish ect, I just enjoy driving and I feel they are a real drivers car. Could have had a lovely whatever with the money spent on it over the years. Still have a Scirocco that looks shit, but it puts a smile on my face still. Bloody knuckles, fuel problems, (that trousers filler neck) broken springs galore, snapped struts, what other cars goes so well round country roads and still looks mean around the town. The Italian design that still in my books looks great in terms of design and ergonomics and has a VW badge and reliability. What other car gives you that at a reasonable price.

I had the same dilema last year, all work was done just the respray...i estimated arround £1500 more to finish it.......

I decided to break it and sell off as spares.......I netted aprox £1800 in hard cash...i regret it when i look at the photo's but £1800 is £1800...and it was just a car at the end of the day...i can always buy another if i realy want to....

As people have said here before, just plod along getting all the bits put to where you want them, it will take time but so what, you have one of only 10 Scirocco 16v's in the UK, less than any other car I can think of at the moment!!!
Yes, you could have a Corrado, but you can any week, where could you possibly buy another 16v?

Stick with it mate, come to a few shows and meet the crowd and get some other enthusiasts giving you a positive critique instead of negative comments such as "sell it"!!!!

Look forward to seeing you both in the near future mate.

yeh but its easy enough to convert a 8v to 16v....the 8v is better allround..the benefits of a 16v are only at the higher rev range.

for the purist, the 16v should be lhd as it left the factory....

Ben, Jasons car is an original 16v, it was coverted to RHD by a dealer before it was even sold to the first owner!
