Cambelt change issue

Post by ash-lough »

Hi guys got a bit of a problem - doing a cambelt change...

Got the crankshaft and intermediate pulley lined up and the camshaft pulley notch in line with the front of the cylinder head, put the belt back on and it wont fire up. The belt spins fine but it doesnt fire.

When the bottom two pulleys are lined up, shouldnt that be top dead centre? However having done the screwdriver check top dead centre falls at a completely different point on the crankshaft pulley.

Also when the two are lined up the dizzy rotor arm is not in line with the notch on the rim... is that also a problem?

Having followed the Haynes/various guides and it not working what should I try?

Any help is appreciated.

Cheers
:good:

Ash

Sounds like either the belt or a cog has slipped during installation... This should help http://www.vwenthusiast.com/technical/T ... gbelt.html

It's for a 2litre but the procedure shuold be exactly the same :)

the intermediate shaft can be 360 degrees out... there's 2 turns of that to 1 turn of the crank. (as i remember(!)) and it's the intermediate shaft that turns the distributor - so your ignition timing would be 180 degrees out if this is what's wrong.

correctomundo. it also drives the oil pump, but that's not critical :)

So would I give the intermediate a full turn and leave the others as they are?

You got it :)

Might be easier with the dizzy cap off.

All done, cheers for the help guys. Turns out we were using the crank pulley not the one that is connected and turns the fan belt as our marker. Oops, at least I know for next time now!
