Re: Rare as they come - My Rieger GTO Scirocco
I’ve finally done some work..... and I really enjoyed it! Got the tinkering bug back again!!
Front end completely stripped, removed the wishbones, brakes and lines, ARB and associated bracketry.
All brackets have been cleaned up and hammerited.. New Wishbones, ball joints and poly bushes fitted ready for the install.
Brake Calipers and Carriers have been wire brushed ready for a nice lick of red paint. The yellow paint that was on them was flaking and looked a right mess. The G60 Disks are alright bar a bit of surface rust so will be re-used after a spot of wirebrushing. Going to get some new pads though. The track rod ends seem to be in good condition so I’m going to leave them for now, plus it saves realigning all the steering.
I’m also going to have the Flywheel and clutch assembly lightened and balanced at the local engine tuner.. Tried to remove it last night but I didnt have the right socket. Its 12 sided bolt, and i think a 9mm? the 10mm is too big put it that way. Want to drop the flywheel off tomorrow, so i can get it back on the engine next week.
2 questions:
On VW’s do you need to replace the flywheel bolts when you remove them?
What size 12 sided socket do you need to remove the clutch cover?
Progress!! yay!!

Good luck with this rare thing. I think it would look good in Monza Blue or even Black....
If it is not broken, Do not fix it !!!
Re: Rare as they come - My Rieger GTO Scirocco
I usally use a 9mm ring spanner, and tap them loose with a hammer then remove them with a 9mm socket. If there really tight use a 19mm socket and rachet on the crank pully bolt.
As long as the bolts are in good condition then clean the threads and put a drop of thread lock on them.
Looking good tho mate top work.

Flywheel off (yes it was a 9mm) and taken to the man who is a machining guru. hopefully i'll get it back some point towards the end of the week. i took my new clutch up with it so he could balance it all as one unit. Pics will be posted upon return, but after a short chat i think its going to come back alot smaller. which is superb!!
I need to get new flywheel bolts tho, on removal one snapped and the others didnt look too nice, i might have to take a trip to VW as GSF didnt appear to list them?

Set of 9 new flywheel bolts ordered - you can only get them from VW now (in packs of 10 i might add).. special order item now so they should arrive tomorrow. I also ordered some new injector inserts and seals for the inlet manifold as they had perished.
I've also been bad - and bought a roll cage...

I love christmas money!!! and christmas money loves my scirocco...
its a custom alloy cage made by Lloyd Allard Motorsport. I was first abit apprehensive about alloy cages thinking they were just for show use etc, but they do work... infact I think they alloy cage I had in my Mk2 Golf saved my life..

Been quite busy with the car and its moving on nicely now.
Got the Flywheel back, i’m really happy with it. Quite a conciderable chunk has been taken out off the back of it, as you can see the outer ring has been taken off up to where the starter motor teeth are, which exactly what I wanted as its where it makes the most difference. And then its been balanced again. I havent weighed yet so cant say exactly how much has been taken off but I will do before its fitted.

The newly poly bushed wishbones and Eibach ARB.

And Fitted

I’ve not fitted the cage yet, as I am going to be making some adaptor plates that I can weld into the car, but I trial fitted it and it looks really good too..

Re: Rare as they come - My Rieger GTO Scirocco
Got a bit more work done last night. Wednesday nights are now devoted to fixing my car.
Put the new clutch and flywheel on (all new bolts) and also changed the cambelt while the engine was out.

The gearbox was filthy so gave that a good clean up which took ages and then bolted it to the engine. Its not immaculate by any means, but is 10times better than when I started.

A few nights ago I sorted out all the wiring that I need for the engine, I need to remake parts of it as it was just cut out of the donor vehicle, so I am going to try to hide it away where possible to keep it abit tidier, and also I’m thinking of moving the battery to the back of the car as I have a stainless steel battery box lying about from a previous project.
Things are moving on anyway!! I need to get a new insert for the gearbox mount as its perished, and also a rocker cover gasket, but then we’ll be ready to drop the engine in. As long as I can get the bits, thats next weeks job!!
Having thoughts about inside the back of the car again... Going to make abit of an install which holds the spare wheel and also some 6x9s... Crap picture but this is the idea i’m thinking:

Tonights the night my Rocco gets its new engine – wel if it all goes to plan anyway..... I’m extra excited, as in stupidly excitied. plan is to get it in and on its mounts ready to be wired up over the next couple of evenings..
Oh, and I rang Compomotive Alloys today because I needed another center cap for the 5th wheel to use as a spare…. They thankfully had a couple in stock (6 to be exact) so I bought 2 of them, one for the spare, and 1 for a spare spare just incase I ever loose one on my travels. The man at compomotive said they stopped making the centres years ago and prob will never make them again... Finding pictures of these wheels if hard enough, let alone buying spare parts for them.
I asked about replacement centre logo’s too but they changed them to the new Compomotive logo back in 1995, fingers crossed he be able to locate some deep in some store room?!

They look similar to BBS ones but are slightly different in size and pattern.

Re: Rare as they come - My Rieger GTO Scirocco
Wel last night didnt go as planned. Got more work done but didnt get the engine fitted. Faffed around doing other bits, plus my mate came and dropped off an ABF engine for me to tinker with when i've time. I wanted a spare 16v head to port and polish, and also i needed an inlet manifold to butcher for so i can adapt it for throttlebodies. Anyway, he needed it moved - so i got the whole engine for £80, with the ecu and loom.
After what Cookie101 said a few months back about the Hot Tuning manifolds,
I wanted to check that the manifold would fit nicely onto the head when assembly time came - OMG, what a pile of crap it is, its shocking, i'd never really looked at it in detail or tried to fit it before - its so badly made i couldnt get it on the manifold studs in the head!!! So that getting scrapped and i'm going to buy a dubpower one like i should have in the first place.
Tip to all - LISTEN TO OTHER PEOPLE.......
So - i'm abit behind schedule, but apart from that its good news..
Compomotive rang back, they actually only had 1 centre cap not the 6 they originally thought. The others were for later versions which are slightly different and dont fit properly. So thats in the post now. They also found some centre logo/decal things which is great. Good job I rang up and asked for some otherwise i would have never found one!!

9mm 12 point socket. Halfords sell them individually if you just want one socket.
BTW on your flywheel, IIRC the lightest 020 stock flywheels I've seen (based on lightened standard ones) are just below 3kg. From memory, a standard one is about 6kg I think.

Re: Rare as they come - My Rieger GTO Scirocco
Been pretty busy so only had a few evenings to work on the car over the last few weeks. Good progress though, the engine was put back in last night!! Here's me holding my breath everything goes smoothly!

Fairly straightforward but the drivers side mount is abit of a pig to do isnt it!? once that was located everything else went in without any problems really. All new mounts were used, the front one and drivers side are polyurathane ones. The others are new standard ones. Refitted all the brake linkage and greased that lot up, i just need a couple of those fabric washers now then the servo can go back on and I can make up some new brake lines.
I’ve also cut the rear parcel shelf supports out as dont have any rear seats.. I think it looks alot better, i just needs a spot of paint and then we'll be ready to put some carpet back in it

Next jobs to be done..:
Buy a new exhaust manifold – thinking dubpower, just waiting on a price back from them. May go for an ashley system though? Has anybody used these manifolds?
Connect up the Fuel-Metering head and pipework
Driveshafts and Brakes.
Re-wire the engine - i'm hoping to tidy all this up in the process.
Paint inside and make a floor for the back .
Carpet the rear quarters
Bolt the cage in properly.
Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel now though. Which is lovely!!
