Seized MK2 Alternator

Post by dani_r »

Hello all!

I am in the process of getting my Gl back on the road again after having issues with the alternator seizing!

Decided to give her a new water pump, cam belt and tensioner and a new alternator.

Can someone please help me find which alternator i need? The sticker of the original is only half complete and it seems it's the other half that i really need.

The details of the sticker are:

Type - 9.AR.2.708 *MISSING SECTION*....4
049903023 *MISSING SECTION* .....45

It has come from an 82 MK2 GL.

Can anyone help? I've had some say it's a 45amp and some say it's 65! :(

Regards

Dan

log into vagcat.com and you can peruse the vw parts catalog online :) personally i'd go for either a 65A or a 90A if you're running a lot of electricky stuff (big wireless set etc)

The GL's came with a 45 amp alternator. It is the connectors on the back that you need to make sure will fit on a replacement. I have a Bosch 55 amp alternator for sale (in the For Sale section). It has the 2 ring connectors.

So if my car came with the 45a origianlly it would be ok to put the 65a on providing the connectors are the same?

Cheers

the connections to them are very simple. so long as the body is physically the same so it will mount onto the engine, you can swap the connector on the wiring loom to suit. upgrading by 20A output will be not problem at all

Mine has the square type connector on it (motorola I think). Is it possible to get the other connectors from VW if I were to change it over?

it'll either be a plug available here http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/V ... ngs.php#ap

or it'll be ring terminals similar to these http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/V ... srings.php
