Handbrake light randomness

Post by Dutch GT »

Hello,we have a randomly flashing handbrake light which I guess is down to a bad earth. Anyone had this before who could point me in the right direction?
It's the mrs' car, so not in it much when it happens, but it was raining when it happened to me... Maybe that shorted something??

The handbrake light is also a low brake fluid warning light! Check this first mate.
If your fluid is okay then unscrew the plunger under the handbrake and clean it up with some emery cloth, then reconnect, making sure the handbrake actually hits the plunger square on.

Took a look and the brake fluid is a tad low, just enough to set the light of I guess.

Am I ok just topping it up for now, and what do I need to buy... is it like golfs with green or red cap or is it all the same ?

Will look into doing a full fluid swap in summer, or have a mechanic do it at MOT time.

Dot 4 brake fluid is well up to the job. Glad you have solved the problem, again an easy fix.

if the fluid is low enough to put the light on (even if it just flickers now and then) there is going to be a reason for it. you'll either have a slight leak somewhere, or the friction linings will be worn

I find the leak is usally the rear wheel cyinders. Have a look behind the rear wheels (you can do this with out jacking up the car) to see if any fluid is on the wheel.
