Auxilary/Fan belt sqeeling

Post by Austin »

Hi, not sure if this is right area....

The, what I thought was auxilary/fan belt starting making noises about a month ago - when it was on my old polo it eventually snapped, so, I put a new one on. Tensioned it up to about the same tension as the last one. Anyway now it squeels for like the first 20 minutes of driving! It did it this morning and this evening. Is it just too tight, or is something else amiss?

Am I being stupid as haven't done any significant car maintenence in a while?

I would first check it is tight enough!

A new belt stretches and always needs to be adjusted after a couple of hundred miles. A squeeling belt generally means it needs tightening again. Adjust it up till you can press (deflect) the longest section of belt about 1/2", then it should be right.

Turned out the fan felt had stretched and was moving all over the place...sorted now. :)

Glad to hear it. I am a big believer of looking at the simple solution first!
