Steering Wheel Spring

Post by scirocogtx »

Between the steering wheel on my Scala, large splined version, and the column there is a spacer spring. Up until today I have put up with a creaking noise everytime I turn the wheel so I decided to remove the spring.
Will this have an effect on the steering? What is the purpose of the spring?

If it is needed is there a secret to fitting it so it doesn't creak?

Thanks

Looking at the exploded diagram on Vagcat, it looks as though the spring should be below the adapter sleeve.

Having run without the spring I have found that as a spacer it's primary job is to stop the steering wheel from having some lateral movement. Without it the wheel can be 'rocked'.

Also having run without this particular steering spring I have found that it is not it that is causing the noise. The noise is coming from the spring at the bottom of the steering column. I have the feeling that to solve the problem I am going to have to remove the whole column. Is that an easy job?

Thanks again

You do not have to take the whole column off to remove the spring at the bottom, which will come off if you remove the universal joint connection.

However, if you try and drive the car without the spring/s you will have a very loose column which will make the car somewhat dangerous to drive.

The springs are there for a reason.

I was looking to replace the spring at the bottom rather than remove it completely. It looks like one of the washers/seats at the bottom spring have snapped. Will get a better look once I remove it.

As for the top spring I will replace it.
