As the title suggests my Coolant / Temerature Gauge Stopped working..
is this common ?
any obvious trouble shooting i should do before buying new sensors etc ?

Or wire breaking down where it goes into the plug?

My Mk2 Polo had this, the service history shows 4 new black temperature senders being fitted over the years. A plug from a golf in a scrapyard and a bit of solder later, it's worked fine since. :hehe:

If you unplug the sender, turn the ignition on and get someone to watch the guage. You can test it by brieflly bridging the pins in the plug with a bit of wire.

new sensor is only a tenner though, might invest on Tues

If yoiu have acces to a multimeter... it's also easy to check the sensor itself.

Stick yer probes across earth (the block) and the head of the sensor with the meter in resistance mode... do it at start up, as the temperature rises, the resistance should fall.
