knock knock

i have a knocking noise when i change gear in my mk1 (one knock per gear change) any ideas????? iv replaced my top mounts thinking that this might have something to do with it.but it didnt :dunno: :dunno:

Is it a knock or a clunk? Do you feel it through the gearstick? If so, it might be one of the bushes on the vertical shaft on the gear linkage. Mine cracked and fell off a while back - causes the shaft to clunk against its housing every time the gearstick moves.

does it do it when you ease off or when you stamp on the gas? think i'd be looking at engine mounts (loose or buggered) or lower arm bushes first off

yes its a knock and its as in pulling away.and i shift up a gear?

jack it up at the front, and have a good check for any play in the ball joints, and any excessive play in the lower arm bushes. then check for any serious movement in the engine mounts. you may well find if it is an engine mount that if you grab hold of the top of the engine and yank it back and forth as hard as you can you will hear the clunk. my money is on a suspension bush though
