The Story So far.......

It starts back in may when I got a phone call in work about how much we would give for a scrap car,
Turns out it was a 1990 GT 1.6 Auto, with a very noisy gearbox and not a lot else up with it. A bit of quick thinking ended up with me personally offering him £100 and I'd take it away, Subject to a viewing.

So after work I went up and had a look.





Paid him my money and cheekily rang the AA for a lift home with it.
"Erm I've just broken down, the gearbox is making a very funny noise"

All went to plan and a couple of hours later She was safe and sound in my garage.

After a bit of thinking and pricing various options I decided the way forward was a 1.8 engine and manual box transplant kindly donated from a scrappage scheme 1992 golf driver.



And that is unfortunately where it stayed for the next few months, waiting for a "mate" to help with the conversion. Which turned out to be wait for me to finish my 6 camper van projects and I might eventually get round to your Scirocco.

So I soon got bored of that and last month decided Sod it, I'm gonna go for it.
A few short phone calls later and I had loan of an engine crane and then the fun begins.

Out Came the shifter and selector cable.



The engine bay and old engine got stripped and unplugged.



the driveshafts and complete exhaust removed.

And then out she came...





And that's about as it stands now. Done a little cleaning and preparing but nothing serious.
Poly bushes on next and am going to get it lowered, a lot.

I'm amazed that a G-reg GT wasn't a 1.8 already, unless it had been sitting unregistered for a while. My GT was F reg and it was a 1.8

When I saw it I was shocked the paintwork is a little scruffy but nothing too bad, virtually no rust, anywhere. and the interior is practically immaculate.
Long way to go yet but thankfully nothing too difficult or expensive, Just gonna take my time and get it right.

Am from Northwich, Cheshire. Might try and make it up to the Manchester meet next month but unfortunately wont be in the Scirocco.

And I don't know much about them really just a car I've always loved the look of so couldn't turn it down for the money.
It was 1st registered in April 1990 and is the 1592 1.6.

Just can't wait to finally finish it and go for a drive.
The furthest i've been in it so far was from the guys driveway to the main road where the AA man picked me up.

Bit of an overdue update,

It's been a while but I have been plodding along getting through my massive todo list.

Unfortunately I seem to have lost ALL of the recent photo's somehow, but...

The new engine and box is now in and all connected, put 20 litres of fresh fuel in the tank, new plugs & leads, new Dizzy Cap and rotor arm and she fired up pretty much first time.

Got a long list of jobs to finish for the MOT but a massive step forward.

Gonna be doing a few little job's today and got a little question for you all,



Does anybody know what the little green wire tucked into the cable tie is for??

I'm sure someone will, and will save me trying to figure out the wiring diagrams in my haynes manual. I'm sure they
make perfect sense but to me its all just lines.

Its actually gren with a black trace.

From memory its for an oil temp guage ( goes to the sender ) Maybe your car doesnt have the guage fitted .

There's a green/black wire connected to the top of the oil filter housing on my 1.8i, can't see anything else in that area.

Dingorocco is correct, the wire is fitted for connection to an oil temperature sender on the oil filter which feeds a VDO gauge next to the ash tray. The gauges and senders were not fitted to most Mk2's but the wiring loom just included the wire. If you look up the back drivers side of the fuse panel and pull the wires a bit you will find the other end of the green/black wire is not actually connected to anything.

Just as I thought I was making some progress, the little annoying problems start. Inlet manifold is off again because of a massive water leak from a knackered rubber grommet in the inlet manifold. Am now waiting till Tuesday for a replacement from VW. :(

In the mean time I have decided to have a bit of a tidy out of the bits that have been piling up inside and start to re-fit the bits of interior I removed during the conversion. This has brought me to my next question....

Can anyone help identify the wires in this picture?



They are;
Black with blue trace
Black with grey trace
Grey with red trace
Solid Brown

I know the brown is an earth, the rest I'm not so sure about.
The car was an auto and all this is from around the gear selector.

I would think one is the back light for the gear selector and the other maybe is the switch that stops the car starting if the selector is in gear.
