Metal cooling pipe - discontinued!

Post by si.goodwin »

Hi Guys,
My Rocco (1990 GTII, 1.8 Carb) has started spraying coolant out of the metal pipe that goes from near the heater valve down across the front of the engine to the water pump. The pipe is rusty and has sprung two leaks at once so is clearly shot.

Have tried VWHeritage and they don't have it, VW have discontinued it too.

Any ideas would be much appreciated, It's my daily driver so needing to sort asap!

Simon

Hmm, I could only find one on GSF for the injection model.

I managed to get one off a scrapper locally, but the donor was an injection and there is a take-off missing for the inlet manifold. :(

Thanks anyway.

As an update, HeritageVW called me back and said they can get one, it's just a month lead time. Top guys and very helpful/quick getting back to me. If I can't find one in the meantime I may have to order it and find something else to drive for a month!!

Simon.

GSF list the same pipe for all models.

How many outlets does your pipe have? Three or four? Do you have a picture?

I may have a used one spare and will check over the weekend.

Don't have a picture, can post one tomorrow, but it's the one with four outlets, ie two ends and two additional branch outlets.

The one on ebay is golf specific, I phoned the guys there and they had a bit of a check and a conference and said, noop, no fit. VW confirmed the same thing. The only other car that shares it is the later mk1 cabrio's that are 1.8 carb, and you can't buy it for them either.

All good fun! Thanks for the help guys.

I bought one from GSF but I had to buy a proper sealing cap from VW to seal one of the holes up by the bulkhead. The fella at VW told me that they were only making a generic one now and the sealing cap is what is fitted. I am out of the UK at the moment but can give you the part number sometime next week if you want.

That's surprising - as it's the same engine?
What are the differences then?

Hmm, not sure but they seemed certain. Anyway, finally got GSF to answe rthe phone today and they claim that theirs will fit both carb and injection, so it must have the extra take off for the manifold, and I guess you just have to blank it if you have an injection. Have ordered one so on monday we should know!

Pics of my disintegrated one should be attached... with heavy use of insluation tape technology which got me home!

The one you've ordered should be the same one as in you're pic,
the other type (which you cant buy anymore) doesn't have the extra outlet on it , i've been trying to get one for my GL, but as Ian said i'll have to buy the rubber plug from VW to seal it off.
