My 1985 c plate does not have side repeaters so I guess regulations must have changed for 1986.

Maybe the bit in bold applies?

Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986
These must be fitted with one side repeater indicator on each side. Instead of a separate lamp, the side repeater might be part of the front direction indicator if it includes a wraparound lens. Lamps incorporating a side repeater are marked either with an 'E' mark in a circle or an 'e' mark in a rectangle above which is the number 5.

Not strictly true. I know it's a requirement for post April 86 cars but it's down to how lenient your tester is. I know a few lads with smoothed cars and they have no problems.

"As long as the front indicators can be seen flashing from the side of the car at a rate of 60-120 times a minute as an orange colour then it will pass." Copied from club polo forum.

I wouldn't advise discussing it with your tester, but do ask around your friends.

the rocco lens i've got sat on my desk don't have that marking on it. it's probably just one that was made to the pre '86 standard and registered late. most mot testers would probably just let it thru

Think i will be ok,known him for years..Can cross that one off the list.
Thinking this kit may have been fitted before, some sections on the back panel have 2 sections filled in,the hole for the exhaust has been cut,and also towing eye cut out,and painted.trange.

from the testers' manual:

Vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1986

These must be fitted with one side repeater indicator on each side. Instead of a separate lamp, the side repeater might be part of the front direction indicator if it includes a wraparound lens. (See information on following page).

Acceptable wrapround lens marking

Lamps incorporating a side repeater are marked either with an 'E' mark in a circle or an 'e' mark in a rectangle above which is a number 5. Some vehicles are fitted with a wraparound lens with no European approval markings. These can be tested by standing approximately 1000mm to the side of the vehicles rear bumper with indicator on. If amber light can be seen coming through the front lens (not a reflection) this is acceptable.

Mine has side repeaters, but they are smoked so you cant really see them on all angles.

I had a car with them fitted to the Wing Mirrors abit ago. Another option if you dont want to drill holes in the arches Mr D, but i dont know if it would look great on a rocco.

You'll be fine! Tester's arent THAT picky. Some MOT rules are ridiculously stringent and if testers paid attention to every single one without any lenience, half the cars that pass would fail. Just don't point it out to him.
