Hi,
Does anyone on here have any knowledge of changing the metering heads on the 1800cc gti engines??
What might be involved/required/problems???
I understand that the K-Jet fitted as standard cannot cope with extra fuel/air requirements when you tune this engine ie fast head/capacity enlargement etc..!
The K-Star was a solution used to provide the extra fueling but has gone by the wayside - Megasquirt doesnt seem to be an option unless you have a 16v....
Does anyone have any ideas or advice please????? Rgds R
I've just Megasquirted an 8v Rocco, which was previously on Kjet and running about 140 bhp. There's no minimum number of valves required. I reckon I've got 10-15% more power, on a modded 2.0 8v with pack D head, 285 cam. The same engine was dyno'd at 160ish bhp when it was on carbs, and built for the VW Cup.
Following on from that, I know of people running around 200bhp on a golf mk2 16v metering head, so what spec of engine are you running?
I've no doubt that optimising the fuelling and spark on your car will give more power, but there's plenty of headroom to work with in VAG Kjet setups.
I've no direct knowledge of the volvo kjet stuff, but if it's a 4 cylinder metering head, it shouldn't be all that hard to fit. A bit of measuring, and checking of thread sizes on the inlet and injector pipes, would be the place to start.

Well its essentially a 2.0 btm end with piper 285 cam and fast road head....... whats the sort of cost of the megasquirt you have done? Did you fit it?
I paid £350 for an ECU and loom, and probably another £200 in parts such as fuel rail, injectors, airbox, fuel hose, filter, electrical sundries, etc - mostly at scrapyard prices for the VAG bits, and allowing some cost for the bits I had sat in the garage already.
Then you need to get busy with the soldering iron and crimping tool. You can map it yourself if you have the kit, patience, and confidence. I paid an expert to do it for me, as time was running out before the 'ring trip in august (Car was mapped on the Sunday and Monday, ferry was 6am Wednesday.
It could do with going on a rolling road to set up the cam timing properly. It hasn't been on one since it was on Kjet, but it's doing a power run on the same RR this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

There are plenty of companies around that will adjust fuelling on the kjet. You can do it yourself with a c02 analyser and adjustgn your warm up regualtor. The volv meterin head is mainly used for turbo setups as it allows a huge amount more fuel to be flowed. Yours shoudl be good for any head cam work you want doing.
If you want a drive in/out megasquirt setup your lookin for alot of cash. Im getting alot of engine work doen in jan and one of the points will be a megasquirt setup which will cost 1k in itself!
You really need a wideband AFR gauge, rather than a CO2 analyser. Your gunsons type of analyser won't tell you if the car is running lean at 6000 rpm on full throttle, which is the point at which a modded engine is most at risk.
There are plenty of VAG specialists (TSR & Stealth, to name two) who can set up Kjet for you if you want to pay a pro to do it.

Do yu have a kstar then? It sounded like you did form your first post. If so you can install the wideband and tune it yourself. The kstar sits piggybacks the wur so you can adjust it as you drive. This will save you payign to have wur tuned and allows you to make on the fly adjustmets ofr any other mods you have.
Guy's thanks for the info - The car had a K Star originally and it broke! The K Star system is now old and generally considered dead so hence very hard to find anyone that could or might be able to repir/help.
The car has a good engine and its not running at its potential and is detuned effectively which i think is a waste and i was advised that the metering head effectively could be the issue as its not very tunable and cant cope with much over the stock set up! - Hence the topic......
I have one last attempt with a K Star that might work and that would be great otherwise i may look at the USA offering! Its also handy i have a sister in the USA too!
I have read the link for the device in the states and it states that it needs a throttle positionj switch which if i remember from the Digifant engine is literally a box and plug that bolts on the underside of the throttle body and runs off the spindle of the throttle flap...????
I have one of these in a box somewhere - i presume that that is all i have to get to fit...?????
