Instant FREE brake upgrade!

Post by Dutch GT »

I have standard but new brakes (no braided hoses or such as yet) and have been searching the forum for what's best etc.

However! In the meantime I have been using my left foot to lightly press the brakes whilst driving up my hill which has a very knackered surface, which rattles my pads (think the retaining clips are missing) and is very embarrassing.

Anyway, to get to my point, I once had to slow down for someone and nearly went through the window. I tried this again on a level road and I swear that braking with my left foot somehow has more effect than my right.

It could be that my left leg is stronger... but that is unlikely
It could be that my left leg is less sensitive because I am not used to using it in this way
It could be that the angle of my leg is the problem! I am 6'6" and have to drive in the 'giving birth' position due to the way the scirocco is (big ish low wheel and low slung seat).

SO, can anyone else try this and see what you think.I'm sure I am not imagining it, it really does feel far more effective at stopping, just not very practical.

Try driving any car and braking with your left foot, you will soon see it is more to do with not being used to breaking with your left foot than being more efficient
Dont try it in an HGV with air brakes tho :dash:

your left leg is used to stomping a clutch pedal straight to the floor. it will instinctively do exactly the same on the brake.

That was my first thought. I mean, it will happen in my MkIV golf with decent modern brakes, but if I can do the same effect with my right foot if needed. But after trying to stomp with each foot in the 'rocco, the left wins every time. And I am convinced that as the discs have bedded in, I have noticed the difference as a passenger, but not much when I drive myself. In fact, I'm sure the mrs managed locked them up for a brief moment (no pun intended) the other day. There must be something mechanical, voodoo physics or something. Maybe the pedal catches when pushed to the left but not when pushed to the right!?

Just really strange that the bonnet goes south far quicker with my left foot.

Sorry for the stupid thread, just wondered if anyone else had noticed. I would say the same as you guys if I hadn't driven the 'rocco.
