front to rear brake pipe

can anyone tell me where the main front to rear brake pipe was originally run? was it along the underside of the car or along the inside on the sill?

Up to 1978 the brake pipes were run inside the car on both sides. Sometime in 1978 the brake pipes were moved to run under the car inboard of the floor strengthener on the ns.

Fuel lines up to 1978 ran right next to the os sill (watch that jack!). Again, sometime during 1978 they were moved to mirror the brake pipes inboard of the floor strengthener on the os.

ok, so it probably is meant to be there then. i can see the sense in it - keeps it away from the weather for a bit of protection. the only thing i've seen brake lines inside the cabin on before was my 1303, and they run diagonally accross the footwell right where your clutch foot heel goes and was squished flat. might explain the low brake effort

Just to add confusion to the mix, my late '79 Gli also has the inboard brake lines!

all very curious. Emma's late 77 GLS has the brake lines on the inside of the car. Do you reckon it depended on who was working which shift at Karmann?!!

The '79 cars mentioned above might have been manufactured) entirely, or partly, in early '78 and registered later. We also don't know for certain which cars have been changed since they left the factory (i.e. possibly Craig's car).

I can see more potential problems with external brake lines. We don't know why they were moved by VW, but I'd have thought it was mostly about saving costs/time either at manufacturing or servicing.
