It seems to operate at anything approaching 2000rpm and beyond. The oil pressure warning light does not flash simultaneously, which the owner's handbook says is what ought to happen, and I've no real reason to suspect low oil pressure. I think it might be another electrical problem, but again I'm not really sure what to check.

Help! (Please)
I have just posted an FAQ about how this system should work and a test sequence.

Thanks for the pics Ian, I'll take another look when I have a chance.

Ed,, the oil pressure buzzer in early mk2s is down to a small L shaped piece of printed circuit board, fitted behind the instrument cluster. It controls the oil light and the buzzer, revving upto around 2000rpm causes the buzzer to sound. I had this problem on my first couple of mk2s 20 odd years ago. Back then the replacement PCB was around £40 from VW.

Don't ask me....it was like that when i got here !

I thought the gear change indicator ran of the gear box switch. When the car is in neutral or 5th it cuts the circuit on the shift light.

I've had 2 gtxs with the mpg gauge and neither of them worked. I managed to find a scrapped rocco with a low mileage mpg dash and swapped that it. I think they jsut tend to die quite easily. Maybe thats why they dropped them.....?

Right-ho, I know the solution is going to involve taking the bloody clocks out. At the moment, hitting the dash is still working, but sometimes several applications are required. It'll be interesting to find out if the PCB is still available. 2000rpm sounds spot on.

If youve got a Haynes manual, im pretty sure it shows the L shaped PCB in the exploded view of the dash clocks .

The PCB was still available from VW when I had to replace the one in my LHD MK 1 the first year of the Ultimate Dubs show. It was still £35/40 then.

Run the tests first tho Ed and let me know the results of each. I'll then check the manual's flowchart for narrowing down the solution.

If it turns out that you need a new PCB rather than the Buzzer unit, you will need the part number from the sticker on the clocks themselves in order for VW to get the correct one, as there is more than one type.

My gtis oil buzzer and light come on randomly and stop when I hit the dash aswell, apparantly it's a common thing to get shorts bhind the clocks.

The economy guage is linked to the reversing light switch, which on these models also tells it when it's in 5th.
Should be a vacum pipe from the gauge to a pipe coming out the top of the inlet manifold next to the throttle body that tells it when to light up. I didn't know there was a needle though?

Hope that helps

Also did you sort the problem with the car not starting when semi warm as mine does exactly the same, I was thinking new injectors so would be intresting to know if that cured yours and if so where did you get them from?

Cheers Rich
