Gavin, jack the offside back end up and get your hand up the top of the filler neck and give it a good wire brushing. All the road crud gets stuck to the pipe there and keeps it moist for the rust bug to destroy your beloved. Feeling around with your hand should show up any holes or big rust scabs. They normally rust through where the larger bore pipe is welded to the rest of the pipe about 6 inches down from the filler cap. Shine a torch all around the top end of the pipe and look through the filler cap, if you see light its time to search for a new filler pipe! The rest of the pipe down to the tank is normally ok

Take a look at the inside of the rear arch from inside the boot. If there's corrosion there, it's likely you've had dirt and moisture trapped between the arch and the filler neck, which will probably have corroded the other direction into the filler neck as well.

This is where to look, although there's no rust here:

Its always worth cleaning under the wheel arch with a hose and your hand every year or so and I always heat up some Waxoyl and spray some more up there to keep the rust at bay.
It can get messy up there driving along those country lanes, Cows - need I say more

Don't forget to check the brackets that secure the filler neck to the wing at the top

They're only spot welded on and on mine water got trapped in behind the welds and I had to have the inner wing welded up after it rusted through (looks great now, you wouldn't know).
