Stalling under heavy breaking...restarts OK...any ideas?

Post by DT1 »

Mmm...just what i need before the National., replaced the broken front ARB clamp and now there's something wrong with the fuel (1.8i).

The main fuel pump was making what can be best described as a groaning noise, then last Friday as I was accelerated to overtake up a hill it started to stutter so I dropped back.

Then I got to a roundabout, braked and the engine cut out but restarted as soon as I turned the ignition.

Replaced the main fuel pump but although it doesn't make as much noise it stills stalls under heavy braking occasionally.

Anyone come across this?

No idea, but a few guesses....
Muck in the resevoir between the lift and transfer pump blocking the flow when you brake hard, although not sure how it would get there past the lift pump.
Brake servo leaking vacuum when its doing its thing.
Dodgy lift pump, not supplying enough fuel into the resevoir and the transfer pump runs dry momentarily.
Clutch not fully releasing so the engine is fighting the brakes and stalls...you'd smell this one though.

All just stabs in the dark, could be total bobbins.

I'm hoping that it's the lift pump because that's what I ordered last week!

Most of the issues I have tend to be accelerating or decelerating, at a constant speed you wouldn't know anything was wrong.

Edit: It seems that was the problem, dodgy lift pump.

Hopefully it will stay fixed.
