Variable intermittent wipers

Post by DT1 »

Anyone know any VAG cars use this system? Ideally dash mounted rather than column mounted.

It's for that rain that is heavy enough to cover your windscreen in 5-6 seconds (less than the intermittent sweep) but not heavy enough to have the wipers on constantly.

Sorry mate, don't you mean the number 99 relay? That allows you to have intermittent wipers :good:

I have intermittent wipers but some cars let you change the frequency of the wipe on the intermittent setting.

I've driven a few cars that had the adjustment on the arm on the steering console but that's no use as I have an MFA.

Yeah mate, the relay allows you to set the gap between swipes. it changes the fixed intermitant with the 19 relay to variable. When fitted you switch the intermitant on let it wiper once and turn off then leave the gap you want your intermitant to wipe at and turn intermitant on again. It can be set from 5 to 45 seconds iirc. :good:

Sorry didn't think that the relay could be set while moving, thought it was only when stationery with your aux power on.

That's well handy to know. So you can set the rate of intermittency if you put a 99 relay in place of your 19 one? Sweet.

it's actually very common on modern vehicles and i bet most people wouldn't even know their car has it. another thing i've seen that i want was on my megané (though i'm sire others will have it too) when you have the wipers on speed 1 or 2 and you come to a standstill, they drop down to intermittent and then back up to speed when you set off again. and if you put it in reverse with the wipers on it does 1 wipe of the rear

Nate,

IU'd imagine that both of those would actually be very easy to do and to wire in. Leave it with me (on my project list) and I'll take a look at the feasibility of doing it. The rear wipe would have no use for me... but certainly the front wipe option, although it may be more difficult than first thinking as you'd need either a throttle sensor or some way of knowing you were in neutral, or indeed with the handbrake on.

I'll have a think :D

i'd guess the megané uses the RSS to detect that you've stopped, but a feed from the handbrake switch might be do-able?

You should be able to do it simply with relays tbf.

Had a bit of a think last night, will draw up a circuit diagram for you and whack it up. But if your car blows up it aint my fault :hehe:

keep an eye out at the shows/autojumbles where people selling old fuseboxes - petegli has picked a couple of these 99 relays up recently for a quid each!
