Starting problem

Post by GreenMachine »

Hey,

been having an intermitent problem with starting the car. When I turn the key the oil light flashes and then I turn further and nothing happenes. The starter motor does nothing. If I try again it works. It doesn't happen all the time and someimes takes a few attempts. It took about 6 attempts earlier (only difference was that it was raining??). Is on a carb (webber). I don't know where to start to diagnose the issue. I'm thinking it's electrical on the fact nothing happens as all. Could it be something is not earthed corrctly??

Any suggestions on where to start would be great

Turned out to be faulty ignition, mine totaly went a few weeks later and had to rig up a pair of switches to start my engine till i could get it sorted

when you turn the key and nothing happens, try either wiggling it or lifting it whilst holding it turned and see if that does it. it's probably just the ignition switch ion the back of the lock getting worn

My GTI has a similar problem, sometimes nothing happens when you turn the key but keep the key turned and it will suddenly start, its done for years now, i've changed the ignition barrel and checked the wiring, only other thing i can think of is a dodgy starter motor, never got round to trying another one on it yet!
