Exhausts and C-clamps

Post by stu.gtx »

After spending the last 2 evenings lying under my car removing the full exhaust I have developed a new found hatred for those b@stard C-clamps. My old downpipe had gone at the weld where the pipe splits into 2 so after getting a replacement (thanks Mark) I ended up having to remove and replace the C-clamps on the new downpipe twice :ire: :dash:
I also had to @rse on adjusting the joints at the new centre and rear sections to get adequate clearance over the back axle and heat shields. This reminded me why I don't like aftermarket exhausts - they never quite fit right. I'd love a 4-post lift as it's such a ball ache crawling around under the car. I must remember to buy some decent ramps to at least make jobs like this a bit easier.

On a positive note, hopefully my car will now accelerate when I put my foot down instead of just farting at me

Reminds me of when my mate fitted my four branch. When he started on the c clamps the air turned a very deep shade of blue :chortle:

Yeah I think it'd be easier if the intake manifold was off.

Took it out for a blast tonight and at least it accelerates now. Stainless backbox is a bit too sporty sounding for my liking - must be getting old :chortle:

you can make up a tool out of a new exhaust clamp and a small socket,
just take the clamp apart and then put the nuts back on then the bottom flat bit and put the socket on that ( i taped mine on cos it kept falling off)

then you put in in the middle of the exhaust c clamp and do up the nuts :yup:

comes in minutes

i much prefer the loop of rope and scaff tube method. fingers well out the way of the evil things. then once it's off, replace with either a 6 bolt manifold or a 4branch

I actually have the clamp removal tool but the near side one is a bugger to get to properly. Wish I'd gone the 4-branch route but don't want to spend lots of money on one.
