are you referring to the swirl pot mounted on the front of the rocker cover?

i think it is this:

183VG0010 FUEL VAPOUR SEPARATOR SC 1.8 EX Eng. 8/83 > 24.30

(GSF)

At least you can run the car without it connected directly until you source a replacement

I may have a spare if you need it, but will need to check it's condition first.

To be honest... I'll be omitting to put mine back in when I rebuild the car, never really quite been sure why it's there in the first place, I'm kinda hoping that the petrol in my rebuild won't have time to "evaporate", lol

I replaced mine when I thought it was dodgy... Cost 20 or 30 quid from main dealer... I still had nightmares with it not running. Got the fuel pressure checked at the pump and at the carb. It turned out most of the fuel was recirculating, and the pressure going into the carb was tiny! (about 1/7th of what was coming out of the pump!) I put a restrictor in the return line. (piece of brass bar in the pipe with a 1mm hole through it) and problem solved. That way, you keep the additional filtration of the swirl pot and eliminate any possibility of over fueling, as it still recirculates.

The advice I got at the time from our local "expert" was to scrap the mechanical pump, recirculating line and swirl pot, and to run a facet (or similar) electric pump.

As you'll have gathered, I didn't go down that route, and after setting the carb up with the restrictor in the return line, it runs beautifully with the original setup.

In itself not a cheap option, bearing in mind with the wrong pump you'd need a pressure regulator too, or a Filter King style unit (filter and regulator in one).

I'd looked at going down this route on my rebuild, if only to tidy things up a bit in the bay.

For the craic i changed the fuel pump instead of the swirl pot and boom she is flying again but the master cylinder must be dodgy as she wont brake and there is no air in the sytem so may source one :D

true... that's why i didn't go that way. Don't know about the possibility of using VW injection pumps instead. People tend to have those lying around the place.
