Driveshaft?

Post by vwjohn81 »

Hi, I have a 1990 Scala.

I have developed a loud knock/click from the front passenger side of the car which sounds abit like a loose brake caliper/pad but it isn't.

The knock/click in question seems to slow down and speed up with the motion of the car and can only be heard when accelerating or slowing.

Me and a friend had a look and when holding the driveshaft still there is slight play in the front knuckle, as in you can rotate the brake disc slightly..... putting a socket on the wheel bearing nut and rotating the driveshaft by hand the knock/click can be heard.

Would I be correct in saying this problem is definitely a driveshaft fault and would I have to replace the complete unit??

Cheers
John

driveshaft joint will normally show up as a regular thud that varies with road speed and is worse cornering. drive briskly on full lock both directions and see. what i suspect you can hear is more likely to be gearbox related. check the oil level is ok!

does sound like it is probably the outer cv joint on it's way out. GSF list the joint

439VG0170 CV JOINT KIT-OUTER SC 1.8 Carb Manual 9/87 > 39.60

Nice one, thanks for that.

Sadly tho I will be selling it soon, as I'm moving in with my partner so just gonna be using her diesel car for work while we save for a classic beetle.

Just wanted to get an idea of what was wrong and a cost so I know how much I can knock off when selling it.

Nothing else wrong with it apart from that so sad to see it go.

Cheers
John
