What got you into MK2's then???

Post by HotSoutheastWind »

For me i have uber fond memories my my Dads 85 GTS that he had from 88-90, the only pictures i have of it are here:

On a family day out in 1988 to the Holy Island (thats my Mum), i can mind being in the back:

Here on our driveway in 1988 at our old house, im the one on the left with some random boy from another street on the right. Tho why my Dad felt the need to put a tyre round us is anybodys guess - well it was the 80s!!!!

Image

Id love to find it but DVLA say it was last on the road and taxed in 93 - didnt last long did it!!!!

What about you??

after a chevette, a borrowed mk1 polo and then a mk1 golf i sort of fell into them as long ago as 1985 - there were always copies of vw motoring/vw audi driver magazine in the house and i do remember reading how much nicer the roccos were compared to the golfs.

think its a combination of things - the driving position, the smile factor, the noise, the practicality (no really!) and the fact that it's never really been a car for the 'sheep' elements in vw club/forum circles continue to do it for me.

Sounds great mate:) Somehow a MK1/MK2 Golf GTi just doesent do it for me the same as a Rocco - i think its as you say the shape, driving position and the fact that (to me) it seems massively under rated in the shadow of the Golf GTi which is great - it keeps prices in the sensible bracket and makes them that wee bit more elusive - theres certainly a LOT fewer Roccos about than Golfs of the same era.

My Grandma had a mk.I GLS which I vaguely remember from my very early years. I always liked the look of mk.2s and there were several around my house when we moved to Birmingham. Then, in 2003, I returned from a long stay in the USA and decided that I wanted something a bit more powerful than my 1.0 mk.2 Polo. I scoured the local free ads paper for something suitable, and there it was: a mk.2 Scirocco GT with low miles and a good history.

I had fun for a year, then it started getting expensive to fix and I decided to get something more modern. But after a couple of years I couldn't help myself and started a long chain of serial Scirocco ownership that shows no signs of ending soon

Its the runt of the VW litter, the stupid spoiler, ugly fogs and rot-trapping body kit coupled with awfull brakes, candles for headlights and (unless 16v) cripplingly underpowered and in my eyes that makes it cool. My first love will forever be mk1/2 Golfs but the Scirocco is an awesome car because of its faults.

Its so fugly, yet a carefull choice in wheels and a massive hit with the lowering stick instantly makes it a stunning retro car. The "scene" around these cars is the cherry ontop for me. Also the comments and conversations I've had from randoms never ceases to amaze :ok:

Cheers mate - some good reasons in there!!! You do have some random convos with people at shows eh - had a good few utterly randoms myself.

Know what you mean about the brakes - jeeso - initially in the first few miles coming home yesterday i left my braking to where i would in my modern everyday car and there were a few "oh jeesus"'s uttered!!! But halfway up the road it felt as if id never driven anything else.

Then when i got home i moved my everyday car and just about put the clutch through the floor it was so light in comparison to the Roccos!!!! :hehe:

It was the late 80's I went in to Tim Stiles Racing (I was working in Bridgwater at the time) and asked him if he could make my Chrysler Sunbeam go faster, he said 'Yes, but it'd be cheaper if you buy that Scirocco over there.' So I did. The rest is a long story you can read in the project thread. Look for project Bill.

I started on the VW/Audi path when I was first posted to Germany as a young soldier in 1984, it was a Golf GLS 1.6, and I was hooked!
One of the other guys in my troop had a Scirocco GLi, so I just had to have one as well, so in 1985 I bought my first Scirocco, a 1978 GLi in Gold, with brown leatherette and courduroy seats, it was the dogs!
Another bloke in the troop bought a Scirocco GLi as well and we used to go tearing up the autobahns in a mini convoy, well we were young and daft!

After the GLi, I had a couple of Golfs then on a posting back to the UK I bought my first MK2, a 1982 GL, in black and what a nice car that was......since then I have had over 30 assorted VW's and Audis.

Ian, it sounds like theres no turning back now mate - a well established passion id say - and what better place to first experience them than the homeland of the cars - bet the Rocco convoys were fun!!!

My first memory of a scirocco was from the early 90s when some bloke who lived on my mates street had a mettallic green mk2. We were always out playing football in the street etc and can remember being stood with my mate saying how nice it was. Fast forward 2008 and ive just split up with my mrs and im back at my dads needing a car. Went through ebay looking for old cheap escorts/astras when my dad said what about a scirocco? Memories came back so went on ebay and bought my first one,a 1989 GT in white,so who knows maybe if my dad hadnt of mentioned a scirocco i wouldnt be writing this.
