Help with information about an 84 Scirocco

Post by Jaymz »

So the story goes, friend of mines son was told by grandfather 'boy when your 17 I will give you your first car' boy replies, sweet grandpa!

the day arrives and grandpa arrives with a trailer with a car on the back, and unveils this. . . .

Image

To gasps of jealousy from me [always had a soft spot for rocco's, got to the age of 33 and still not owned one :( ] and disgust from the new owner, who instantly said. I dont want this I want a polo!

So the car will eventually be for sale [ungrateful you may say] once we know more about it and can create an accurate description

This is what we know about the car

VW Scirocco GL, 1588 cc,
silver,
date of registration 1/8/84 [B reg / quite a good reg number as well]
factory fitted body kit,
Stored in temperate internal conditions since 1991 [only driven for 7 years]. This is a real timewarp
BBS wheels [mint]

What we would like to know:

Who made the bodykit? I know it wasnt a standard VW item, but i also know it was fitted from brand new as an optional extra

any idea of approximate value? as is and with 12 months ticket on it

It's in great condition inside and out, interior black/grey or silver, no rips tears sagging or bolster damage, very low mileage obviously, FVWSH and totally standard, this is exactly as it left the showroom in 1984, i know that it needs its brakes overhauled, but they probably wont be great even after that as we know the brakes are shocking on good ones

any help advice would be appreciated

Cheers Jaymz

BBS.
Dealer fitted option - Croydon garage called Newbourne did a few of these.

Value - ? difficult to say to be honest, mint '88 GTX - a much better spec than this - went for nearly £3k recently but pictures/inspection would help gauge truer value on this.
The bodykit COULD be hiding some horrors regardless of where/how it was stored and any old car needing recommisioning after 19 years will need a thorough going over.

ungrateful POLO lover indeed.

Thankyou very much.

I know it didn't come from croydon as its a hereford car born and bred on Hereford plates, bought from South Hereford Garages, I think i will have to go out and take some more pics of it.

Do you think the bodykit adds desirability to it, as i've scoured the forums and net and not seen one like this anywhere [the squareish arches kind of set it apart from most of the others ive found] , thats why i've ended up joining a few VW forums to try and get answers. The owner doesnt want to sell it unless she can furnish any prospective owners with a full and accurate description of the car!

i'd be amazed if anymore than 10 or so cars were sold in period with the kit.

might be worth asking VW in Milton Keynes (not a phone friendly company) or flagging it up to Neil Birkitt, Editor of VW Driver Magazine who has contacts there.

It IS a very interesting car due to the kit for sure from an era when bodykits/shoulder pads were all the rage. Not my cup of tea on those rims, search for user Mazellann on here, he has an 83 gti with the same kit on but has tried various bigger wheels with success over the years to make the most of the kitted look. The Mk2 rocco has always had 'issues' re how it looks from the rear 3/4 view due to how it's rear wheels can get lost in the arches on even the factory kitted cars.
If the dealer is still around it might also be worth checking if they have records of what was done to it and by whom. Also IF the car has a full VW history that goes up to 1991 there may be a record of it at your local dealer tracing via the registration plate.

Americans would go wild for this car too and the odd RHD car has been exported over the years if it was the right spec for a person based over there. See VW Vortex forums in the USA, Scirocco Section.

It's a lovely timewarp find and it would be great to see it at one of the shows at some point - see the events section - on a club stand whoever ends up with it.

Thanks, I wish it was falling into my hands tbh, but my volvo project [and daily driver] takes up way too much cash and fuel
