1.8/2L

Post by Mr Funk »

This is probobaly a stupid question but I can find the info i'm looking for. Have a 2L bottom end short block, do all the ancillaries from the 1.8 fit? I.E. gaskets, water/oil pump, dizzy etc etc, everyone I ask seems to think different things

I would think you will need a full gasket set for the 2.0
I am guessing water pumps will be same.
1.8 Dizzy will need the drive cog from a 2.0 dizzy, and an adapter ring.
The breather system needs a blanking plate and a core plug I think.

The dizzy adapter, plate and core plug are available from TSR I believe, or find sort/source your own...

Others have done this, and Ant is in the process, so I am sure more information will be forthcoming.

Excellent, cheers big man.
"Think" it must have alread had the adapter ring/breather stuff as it came from a MK2 golf that was running the same thing. Best I check

you need to use the right head gasket for the 2ltr block ie if its a 2E block use that gasket set.
As above all the bits n bobs fit on but make sure you use the 1.8 bottom pully (one for the alternator belt) has there can be a depth differance.
I used the crank case breather system rather blocking it off, just popped a piper cross breather on the end of the breather pipe.
Also my 1.8 dizzy was a perfect fit, never used a tsr ring thingy...

Here's a coupe of pics of the engine..G60 rocker cover was also used.

So it's not the case of 2L cam pulley and cam belt set up on 1.8 head OR 1.8 cam pulley with belt and 1.8 alternator pulley on 2L block? If you get my drift?? lol

By the looksf things the redundant block I have sitting in my garage has already haa all the modifications so i guess I should really take a look although I have the sneaky suspicion that I'll end up just using the 1.8 and selling the 2l

hmmm.
Swop every thing over from the 1.8 including the bottom pully to the 2ltr, use a 2ltr cambelt, headgasket to suit engine number (block)
All your doing is building a bored out 1.8 ie 2ltr. So every thing is removed and used on the new block.
If you use the alloy 2e rocker cover, then you will need a mk2 golf gti throttle cable bracket to hold your rocco cable inline with the throttle boby..
Simples... ;)
