Could be out a tooth - ISTR it tends to make it sound a bit like a tractor.

Check the timing marks again, but unless you've drained the oil, it shouldn't take any longer to stop rattling than a normal cold start.

If the timing is a tooth out, you should be okay to warm up at idle, but don't go nuts with it..

Thanks for the advice skyrocketeer
ive checked timing marks again and decided to move the intermediate sprocket one tooth clockwise which has fetched this sprocket mark more inline with the crank pully mark also the roter arm has moved closer to the line on the distributor body although it is still just slightly advanced but when the engine started again it's still tappety i ran it for a few minutes it went a little quiter after about a minute but it is still louder than before i just dont know what to try next every things spot on the tappety nose seems louder at the cam sproket end could we have changed the clearences on the tappets when we were trying to undo the crank nut, holding the cam nut as we tryed undoing the crank nut ? i dont know i may be just grabing at straws :ire:
cheers phil

It only takes a degree or two to make a difference..and upto 3 degrees can be the difference between perfection and dog rough. If it's not gone back exactly the same theres a chance the timing might need altering by a degree or two. It could be rectified by adjusting the position of the distributor cap (I think).

I'm basing this on the knowledge gained through setting up a 16v though.

As what you said there as you hold the camshaft nut while trying to undo the crankshaft nut, I would of thought that the camshaft nut is loose so just check to see if that is tight
