Clutch pedal fix! - photos now added
Ok so this will be kind of hard to describe without pictures, but I was 50 miles from home and needed it sorting asap. So here goes.
Age old problem with Mk2 clutch cables, rubbing and grinding away at the bulkhead. largely due to the fact thats it's all on the piss and none of it lines up right. Basically, removed the pedal fromthe rail, then the small tubed section it uses to pivot around was ground and hammered out, then pressed in again on the opposite side, effectivly moving the clutch pedal an inch to the left. Voila! Smooth sailing, nice and central now.
I can honestly say it's the nicest feel clutch I've ever used!
(If this a common knowledge on the fix then feel free to poke fun!)
I'll try and disasemble it all again so you can see whats actually occured (if anyones that interested).

That sounds quite a nice fix... If the tube section is shifted over, do you reckon it would line things up better even if the bulkhead hasn't been modified? Might do this to mine if it makes the clutch lighter...

Re: Clutch pedal fix!
I should imagine so. The trouble is/was that the cable doesn't come through the bulkhead straight due to the position of the pedal, moving the pedal along the rail enough until it lines up perfect straightens out the cable pull and makes things loverly and smooth. It pulls through the rubber grommet straight which takes a lot of friction out of the whole operation.

Well mine certainly doesn't pull straight, and it's at least partially because of the repair panel I bolted on! Do you reckon the pedal box is just as strong following the modification?

Re: Clutch pedal fix!
Yeah, definately.
Just take the clutch pedal off and it'll become fairly obvious as to what needs to be done. It sits on it's own inch long section of tube which contains a poly bush, knock the bush out, carefully grind down the weld on the shortest side, knock it through with a hammer, then put the tube in again the other way up, I didn't weld it up again but dome it over by knocking a taper into the tube. Fit the bush again and stick it all back together, only took 15 minutes to do!
I'll add a photo this afternoon!

Be good to see the 'after' photo. Think I know what you mean but a picture would be good.

Re: Clutch pedal fix!
My clutch pedal is very stiff and creaks as you depress it. Could this be the same problem? I am worried about snapping the cable

Re: Clutch pedal fix!
Sounds EXACTLY like mine used to be. It was horrible and heavy and creaky to drive with. NASTY. Now it's smoother than a babies arse!

Re: Clutch pedal fix!
Ok here goes;
This is a comparison between my pedal (left) and a standard pedal (right). As you can see, my pedal is on the left hand side of the tube section now, and therefor and inch further to the left in relation to everthing else, which for some reason sets the cable up to be near on dead centre to the whole in the bulkhead!

And just to complete the package I made sure the cables path through the engine bay was nice and smooth as well;
The cables comes out and I've routed it to the right;

Around the back of the throttle and over the top;

Then straight down into the gearbox, sits perfectly vertical and pulls straight up, elimates any friction at this end as well.

The routing may have to differ slightly for the 8v and carb cars..Though getting is as close as will make a huge difference.
Anyone at the meet in the 18th is more than welcome to have a play and see the difference in feels it's made.

I've decided to convert mine to hydraulic as it's far too heavy and I'm fed up with it.

Ditto.
After the horror that was/is rocco#2 and it's clutch-cable of doom, I'm all for getting rid of it altogether.
Saying that rocco#1 had an immaculate clutch, cable pulls straight and no sign of stress on the bulkhead, which hasn't been patched or bodged.
Will post details of the conversion when it happens, but right now I'm eyeing up PAS racks (Again).

Try sorting it this way dude, it's amazing how light and smooth it is now. You'd be surprised.

Can't be bothered to patch the bulkhead again, plus running the racing clutch is even heavier...
