Re: Project Pammy (VAG Trophy car?)
Having read the site's FAQ on engines, I'm thinking of either an ABF or KR (maybe 9A) conversion, depending on what I can get my hands on at a reasonable price. It's my first time attempting something like this (building a 2CV racer was much more straightforward) so I want to keep it as simple as possible.
Anyone with a lead on a suitable donor vehicle please send me a PM (I'd need all the ancillaries and the transmission, so it would probably make sense just to get a whole car to break).

Re: The Edmundator's '78 GLS resto thread
Waved the car off to its new home in Manchester tonight. Not confident she'll make it out alive as the chap bought it for the spare panels to restore his GLi.
Garage at home now free for the GTL to take residence so it can be slowly transformed into a racing car.
Will be on the look-out for a mint mk1 again when I can afford one in a few years' time.

Re: Project Pammy (VAG Trophy car?)
A splendidly productive day today, thanks to Ant who came and grazed his knuckles amongst the leaves whilst I looked on and learnt.
Autobox and engine removed, leaving a nice empty engine bay ready for further stripping in due course:
Previously made a small amount of progress with stripping the interior:

Re: Project Pammy (VAG Trophy car?)
Sorry I didn't reply earlier, Brunty. I'm going for class C, I think. From the regs I think I should be able to use an ABF, I just have to run with the respective minimum weight. Does that sound right? Otherwise I'll have to change plans and find a 16v mk2 Golf to rob the engine/'box etc from.

Re: Project Pammy (VAG Trophy car?)
To do list, in no particular order:
(I thought here was as good a place as any for me to write it)
Strip out interior
[s]Remove engine & auto 'box[/s]
Find donor car for engine & gearbox
256mm front brakes
Master cylinder/servo upgrade (possibly from donor car)
Polyurethane suspension bushes
Coilovers
Rollcage
Convert door windows to manual winders
Replace driver's side front wing
Respray
Racing seat
6-point harness
Plumbed-in fire extinguisher
Electrical cut-out
Reposition battery
New wheels/tyres
Save weight
...no doubt more to come as I think of it.

Re: Project Pammy (VAG Trophy car?)
Found some wheels on eBay going cheap - brand new set of light Team Dynamics Pro Race 2 15" alloys. Don't really need the wheels yet, but when you see a bargain...
I also thought I'd set up a running total of costs:
Scirocco GTL auto: £250.00
[SOLD] 13" alloys: £-40.00
[SOLD] Velour interior: £-60.00
[SOLD] Radio cassette: £-10.00
Team Dynamics Pro Race 2 alloys: £186.00
Running Total: £326.00

The Bringer of War
My Mars Red 1982 GTi:
2 owners from new, 110k miles, original and unmodified except for the rear windscreen which had to be replaced after it was smashed by vandals (so the "SCIROCCO" text has disappeared).
This will be restored to perfect original condition.
I'm taking it to a company called G&R classics (http://www.gandrclassics.co.uk) who appeared in Practical Classics doing some work on the editor's Austin Dormobile camper. Their work looks good and they're relatively local to me. I'll update with progress as and when there's news.

Re: The Bringer of War
Easy to get a replacement Scirocco script Ed, I'm really looking forward to seeing this.
When's it going to be my turn to get a GTI?

Re: The Bringer of War
Took the car to G&R Classics today and saw the quality of their work. Very impressed, they mostly work on things like Jaguar E-types and XK 140s, and do proper bodywork with things like lead-loading where appropriate.
It's not going to be cheap, but hopefully I'll end up with the best 1.6 GTi in the country.
Took a few pictures before I put her back to bed:
