I have reason to believe my front springs are well on the way out! Every small bumb especially on long sweeping right handers seems to have the car dipping and banging to no end. I can aquire a set of low mileage used coilovers which are adjustable for ride height, BUT with a minumum drop of 60mm over the standard ride height, and are obviously somewhat stiffer. What I would like to know is with my standard 87 scala wheels, 185/60/R14 will the arches rub? thanks :D

sounds more like the shocks dying, but wither way a set of coilovers will fix it. you may find there is some slight rubbing on the frone end on full lock, but this is most likely just going to be on the plastic wheelarch liner. just remove them and the problem will probably be sorted. watch out for all the mud that'll come out from above them though. always seems to find your eyes

There should be miles of clearence at that. The only issue you might face is the inner side of the tire scrubbing the coilover. Though i've only ever ran 6.5 or wider so I can't say for sure what it'll be like on the standard wheels. Arch wise you'll be fine though.

as the chaps suggest you will be fine with standard wheels/tyres UNLESS you go much above 50mm ish at which point there will be VERY SLIGHT rubbing on full parking speed lock on leading edge of arch liner.
If you remove those then do keep arches regularly clean - you will be amazed at how clean/rust proof/covered in factory wax the inner wing is after all these years but it doesnt take long for grime/salt to do its work, ask any mk1 owner............

You'll also ruin the suspension geometry, but that doesn't stop most people.

indeed. the old wishbone sitting at a funny angle when cars dropped too low line, i feel another suspension exchange coming on as per cutting springs.

Would recommend replacing your current shocks with decent gas absorbers. If you start playing with suspension setup you could make more problems for yourself, which could cost you a bit of money ie spacers/camber alignment/bushes etc

Thanks for all the help. The main reason I was looking at the coilovers is because they were a cheap temporary fix. I guess what I am after is a set of decent gas dampers but probably second hand as I cant afford them new! Are the suspension components on the rocco the same as the mk1 golf? thanks again

Boge gas inserts are £27 from GSF, a little less if you are a paid up member of the Register, better than second hand.
