valve stem seal removal
Ok so one of my stem seals is kaput. I tried to remove it using the advice given in the Haynes book of lies but it is wedged in tight and i just ripped bits of it off with the pliers. Anyone got any tips how to remove this? Also, how do you get the round metal tray that the valve springs sit on off? metal tray?
...stem seals, just pull off with snip nose pilers over the top (on teh od) then pull up!
...get a new one then you'll see what it is and how it should be removed.

You can get special pliers for the job, but I've always managed with ordinary combination pliers. Long nose ones tend to rip the seal as they have too narrow a grip.
A magnetic pick up tool is good for taking the spring platforms out, normally. If you turn the head upside down and shake it, they might fall out, but you might also find there's some oil left in it. :D

ok thanks for the advice. Think i've managed to get a new set of stem seals from on here, i'll have a go again tonight!

i did this just last year, you need a pair of long nose pliers with a 90 degree bend at the end, then you can get at it from the side and leaver against the head to get it out. they are a real pain to get out but getting them in is a piece of piss. once you have the seal out only then can you get the spring seat out. VERY IMPORTANT put the spring seat back in before you put the valve stem oil seal in!!!!!!! other wise you will have to remove it again which will damage it.
I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!

Top tips there james, thanks mate. I've got the old seal out now and replaced the spring seat. Just waiting for some stem seals now.
I may even have a working engine by next weekend!
