HOW low.

Post by T0M »

thinking of buying a shock and spring kit for the mk 2. not sure what sort of drop to go for. i dont know if its just mine but the front of the car sits higher than the back. i would like to even it out . was thinking maybe 40mm drop all round with 10mm lowering caps on front, or a 60/40 kit. also wondering which companies make good kits because i want this to improve the handling not hinder it with some horrible budget kit. have heard good things about the koni stuff? cheers, tom

I have 35mm eibach springs in mine. Sits perfect, nice and low but not too much. The red gtx in 'show us your mk2s' thread.

My scala was down about 70 at the front, even with butchered arches it would scrub, far too much. Look superb though

I'd imagine for that price, they'd better be spanking rather than just good (but then I think £300 for a set of springs is expensive!). Bear in mind of course you still need to get shortened shocks too :)

I have the Weitec Ultra GT 25mm kit (very similar probably the same at the front).

I find it softer than the 40mm shocks and springs I had previously.

In terms of looks the front end is a nice height with my heavy 16v engine in it. The back end is height adjustable with 10mm adjustments.

Take a look at this thread for pics:

My bad, I just saw "Product Notes - These spring sets can only be used with shortened shock absorbers."

Not such a bad price then, although the budget on mine is gonna have to limit itself to the £200 JOM coilovers, unless of course someone wants to buy a low mileage kidney? :focus:

Wait for a decent 2nd hand set, by koni/bilstein/eibach/etc, rather than buy new budget stuff.

Also, I wouldn't drop a car by more than 30-40mm if you want it to handle properly, unless you're going to fit ball joint extenders as well.

funny you should say that MikeH just before you put LweisT's up for sale!!! :-)

drop it all the same .. the reason the rear is lower atm is that the rear springs tire (get tired) quicker than the front with the original sorings in my experiance.

I have droped 80mm (mayby 60mm, can't remember). it looks great, but unless everything is tight, and the inner arches mostly removed (you can cut the upper bit only like Redrum, or take the entire thing out like me) it WILL rub on hard.... mild cornering!

...what I've done isn't foreveryone (Fooonzoooooroooooo hates it!) but I love it :-) ...hard ride though!

hope that helps, Jay.

Jay, that's markh selling LewisT's stuff, not MikeH.

Damn, but you guys must have good roads near you.

I lowered mine by 60mm, and I got so fed up of replacing broken bits from potholes that I ended up raising them so I could get a softer ride.

...and it'll leap around every time you hit a bump in the middle of a corner, because you've got no suspension travel left, and tons of bump-steer. The purpose of suspension is not to make your car look nice. Its main function is to get you round the corner in one piece.

Springs that get tired easily, are probably cheapo brands that are best avoided. Better to get some decent fixed height suspension, than shiny cheapo coilovers that will be shot inside 18 months.

sorry MikeH for gettign you confussed with MarkH!!!

aas for the bumping round corners, I know why you say that, and do indeed beleve you on the theory.

however, i have found my lowered GT2 to be much better at sticking to the road than the scala on std suspention ..in fact every time i give the sacal some the rear end pops out!

...this may all have somethign to do with the fact that i've been round the gt2 and done most jobs to it, wher as the scala is 20 years old and mostly untoughed!

either way round TOM, MikeH is righ.

cheers, Jay.

You'll probably find the scala needs new suspension bushes, and might still be on its original dampers at the back. Mine was until about 160k miles.

A tail happy scirocco is a sign of a problem - probably bushes or a bent trailing arm . Either that or it's a sign of thousands of pounds spent to make it handle more neutrally on track :hehe:

FWD cars tend to understeer under power when cornering. Lot of time and money gets spent making them more "oversteery" so the handling balance on track is neutral.
