Removing the servo and relocating the master cylinder

Post by Boumsong »

Ok, so this is my latest idea.

I want to remove the servo and have the master cylinder on the first linkage through the bulkhead (inthe drivers corner) so it connects directly to the pedal.

What I need to know is, how will this affect braking power? More or Less? I know the pedal will feel more solid, but will it be 'heavier' to push to achieve the same amount of braking force as when servo assisted?

Good idea? Bad idea? Anyone tried it or can speak from experience?

I think Julian in the West Country re-located his master cylinder/s to the driver's side, but haven't seen him on here for a long time.

this car, now owned by Redlee, has had its servo moved to drivers side - infact its a rado set up cut and welded into place.

if you moved the master cylinder over couldnt you use a remote servo from an mg to get some extra power back?

A mate of mine has the servo removed on his track scirocco, and an AP racing master cylinder in its place. You could also go for twin cylinder racing pedal boxes, depending on your budget. You can just about see it in this pic.

Single circuit brakes might cause you issues at the MOT if the tester spots them, so better to go for a polo master cylinder or something that's designed for a road car with no servo.

The brakes will be heavier, but you'll have more feel. Also, I've got a '77 Porsche 911 with no servo, which is a heavier car with more power and bigger brakes, so it can definitely work.

seen a couple of conversions that keep the master cylinder where it is, but use a rotating bar to connect the pedal to it butchered from a fiesta as opposed to the much disliked pushmepullyou system that vw built

yep - my black car has one of the old Autocavan superbrake conversions - ie a bar with less moving bits than the vw system - fitted. works pretty well. Think Ant has one on redroc too that came from the donor gtx he was running a few years ago?
