mk1 1.8t decision time.....

Post by polov8 »

About a year ago, my much beloved and enjoyed gold mk1 GLS 1.8t got partially wiped out by an insane woman in a mk4 >insert coment about mk4 drivers< , leaving what was once a tidy, but not perfect car, in need of some serious TLC. It showed up some areas of the inner wings that I suspected were dodgey, but are still not MOT fail, and it destroyed the drivers side front wing, the bonnet, front panel, grille, and didn't do the passenger wing any favours either. Here's some before and after pics:

Some from the evening it happened :crying:

And some after I bodged it back together so it was driveable:

So here's where I have a dilema, I have no time to fix the car, and other projects and life in general are absorbing all my cash. I'd hate to see the car get junked and broken up as a donor, it's very fixable, but at the same time, in it's current state, who'd want it? Do I stash it and hope i have time in the future, or break it up and sell the conversion?

Thankfully the accident didn't seem to bend the chassis legs, and it still drives straight and true, so in theory, with a pair of wings, a bonnet, and a front panel, anlong with repairs to the inner wing (no worse than fixing the average mk1 rot) it would make a very solid mk1.

The spec as it stands right now:

AEB 1.8t from a '95 Audi A4 (large port head, and with a matching large port intake from a golf) standard in other respects, even has diagnostic socket!
custom stainless 2.5" downpipe
full 2.5" techtonics exhaust system with Borla rear muffler (sounds gorgeous)
Late mk3 golf gearbox
Large alloy intercooler
GTI radiator
Cabrio driveshafts
256mm front brakes, stock drums on the back
Koni top adjustables and eibach springs
rear Autotech hollow tube anti rol bar

Here#s the thread on the whole conversion: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3218953

Your thoughts are welcomed :dunno:

assuming you don't need the cars value as cash and can store it somewhere safe i'd keep it Andy (i am a 'hoarder' by nature tbh).

a few people on here no doubt circling the engine for own conversion opportunitues................

is that an original baikal blue wing?

This is where it's tricky, I could sure use some cash for the Storm project, that's sorely in need of paint, amongst other things, and I don't really have anywhere to store it, it's currently in my dads spare garage, but as it's been there a yea, I think he's keen to see the back of it. Spending money on a lock up for an indefinite period of time could get spendy. If the only prospect turns out to be to sell as a donor for another car, then I'd have to consider it, but I think there's a few parts I'd want to keep, like the suspension.

The wing is a nasty fibreglass one, i bought as an emergency pair!

Screw it, I'll stick it in the classifieds and see if there's any takers, £1300 gets you everything but the exhaust, wheels, and shocks/springs :|

Too late I'm afraid! Just taken a deposit on her, she's going to a good home, and will be put right and enjoyed, that's all I can ask really! :yup:
