Remote mirrors

I remember talk of the mk1 rocco remote mirrors being different to the mk1 golf items.
Is it true - and if so can they golf ones be modded to fit?

I'm after a passenger side, but would take a pair if in v. good nick with all cables tip-top.

vagcat quotes mirrors with 171 part numbers as opposed to 531 - it's the gaskets/plastic attachment points that are different sire.

I found part number - 531 857 501 C for near side
531 857 502 for off side

I believe the golf ones need shaving on the base to fit as they sit at a different angle and slightly higher than the rocco ones - they can be made to fit with some modding though.

Yep they are different, one of the jobs i never seem to get 2 mins to do is to swap the golf one on my GTi for the rocco one sat in the shed.

But yes, definetly different!

I thought the length of the cables differed too.

Back to the bases - can they be swapped from the rocco ones to the golf ones to fit the door properly?

Not had an issue with length of cables...

Bases can be swapped but this tends to lead in a reduction of the "tightness" of the mirror, i.e. there meant to be stiff when you fold them in towards the door for e.g.

Ryan, you're better off trying to source an original Storm one.
