Fuel reservoir
I have an 1800 GT with a Weber carb fitted. Got a bit of a random stutter. Has been running fine then every now and then it decides to stutter and splutter. Having read various threads on here I am of the opinion that the fuel reservoir may be the potential problem.
Can I disconnect this and take it out of the equation or do I need it?
Thanks
Dave

Re: Fuel reservoir
Is that the swirl pot doofer?
I'm just asking, basically I'[m clueless to the answer, lol :D

Re: Fuel reservoir
Yep, that metal pot bolted on front of the engine and sort of supporting the air filter housing.

Re: Fuel reservoir
I've disconnected mine, as have a few others. You don't need it bud.

Re: Fuel reservoir
Thanks for that Alex. Will have this disconnected as soon as I can lay my hands on some fuel pipe.

Re: Fuel reservoir
You should really fit a pressure regulator if you remove the swirl pot thing.

Re: Fuel reservoir
Any advantages / disadvantages in fitting a pressure regulator? Is it possible to get a new swirl pot?
Had to give up on the car this morning and blag a lift to work. It quite clearly was not happy. I have managed to drive it to my mate's garage for him to have a look tomorrow. Work and rain prevent me from getting anywhere near it and I need it on the road.
Thanks
Dave

Re: Fuel reservoir
Thanks. New fuel reservoir fitted. Still not a happy car. Will sit at idle with no problem but as soon as get up to around 3000 rpm the stutter comes in and the car starts to stall. Will just keep working through the fuel system and see what happens. I have a second hand carb and just got a service kit from Ebay. This was one of those future jobs which may well become a present job.

Re: Fuel reservoir
Sounds more like the fuel pump is on the way out.
If you floor the accelerator from idle (in gear) does it stutter as well?

Re: Fuel reservoir
I'm watching this with interest. My car will not run with the swirl connected, its brand new from GSF. So naturally I suspected the fuel pump was on its way out too, changed that and same problem.
Supply the carb direct from the pump and shes happy as Larry, indroduce the swirl and it cuts out and wont start from 5 mins or so.

Re: Fuel reservoir
Bit of an update as I know some are watching with interest.
Car is 21 years old. 172k on the clock. I do 15k motorway miles a year. The fuel reservoir and pump look like the original fit. Car came with a weber so no idea on the history. I have had the car 6 years (bit of a record for me). The carb sits on a stainless steel manifold and exhaust system. This problem has been there for probably 18 months intermittently and since fitting the stainless exhaust. Never to much of a problem and when I tried to sort it in the past the fault disappeared. Now it appears to be permanent.
Have changed the fuel reservoir, fuel pump, fuel filter and checked in the tank. Tank is very clean. Fuel pickup given a blast of air. Previously I have had the lines blown through. Car was running fine last night and revving well in the garage. Even turned all the lights off and shut the door to see if there was a light show under the bonnet. All fine. Drove it 2 miles home and just before home the problem returned.
At about 3k revs it looses power. I keep my foot on the throttle and don't rev it, it suddenly lurches and almost picks up again. A combination of clutch and throttle control keeps me going in a stuttering fashion. It has also been noticed that the manual choke does not have much of an effect on the revs.
Next to change is the carb. I dug out the spare Webber and it is in good clean condition so I will probably try it without stripping it down. I will also replace all the fuel lines in the engine bay. If the problem persists after that I will have to look at the electrical side but I am convinced that it is a fuel problem.
I'll keep you posted.
