20vt or 130 pd engine swap

Post by Storm »

Ok can people say which is the best engine swap 20v turbo or vw 150 pd (diesel) swap to do in the mk1 scirocco
already had o2a gearbox and hydr clutch with vr6/g60 clutch set up in the mk1 as there where needed for the 16vt

like the 20vt as cheap now and bits off the shelf for turning
bit then the 130 pd diesel is quick and very good on fuel and people are starting to turn them now

ideas to which one to do or problem you know of when fitting them to mk1s

thanks for looking

I'm guessing that the 20VT is going to be a lighter engine... which can only be better for handling.

20vt maybe old but very tunable and won't sound like a tractor, guy at local vw club has one in his mk1 gti and its rapid as in low 13s at the pod :ire:

For a daily, there's a fair argument for the diseasel. It won't handle as well, but you can get them up to 190 horses and 300+ lb ft, and still get over 40 mpg

I voted petrol.
Just because I think it would suit a mk1 better.

Which diesel are you looking at 150 or 130?
I have the 150 pd in my (actually the wife's) Bora and it flies.
I've been using it recently for my commute while I get new tyres on the Passat.
It's got a chip on it, but even without it's a really fun engine, doesn't feel like a proper diesel - much revier like a petrol (I sometimes stall it when getting it off the drive, as I forget that and am much more used to the non pd passat diesel!)

If you go for a 150 beware though, all of the Golfs we tested were sheds that had been thrashed and felt aweful.
The Boras were a different matter though - test drove 3 and all were in very good nick.

I voted petrol.

Why not break away from the crowd and explore VAGs new range of engines, such as the 2.0l TFSI?

I voted diesel mainly because it hasnt been done as much as the 20VT. Also look at the Allard Racing Scirocco, Seat Cupra BTCC and world touring cars and the diesles in the VW cup. If you know how to drive them they can be just as quick as the petrol on the road.

Go Diesel for a change, I had a MK5 Golf daily driver with the 2.0 tdi 138 hp engine and that was a flying machine, and still managed 50mpg no matter how hard it was driven. My last daily driver was an Seat Leon FR TDI 170hp. Before I got that I test drove the golf mk5 GTI and I can honestly say the Leon felt quicker. Dont just look at BHP or potential BHP, its torque your looking for, especially in such a relatively light car.

im 50 50 on it.
20v is common but a nice lump to tune up
The diesel lump would be odd to see, but from what i hear tuning is just as good..
Guess really you need to weigh up the sums....
