High Tickover

Hi Guys,

Am I right in thinking that the only device that controls the tickover on a poorburg is the bi-metal coil?

I have a 1.8EX carb which has been acting up. Basically the car starts fine and drives well but as the car warms up the tickover gets higher and higher up to around 4000revs. Then once the car gets up to temperature, as if someone is flicks a switch it goes down to normal. I'm thinking the bi-metal coil is jamming but I thought I would check that there are no other sensors which affect tickover.

I had a similar problem, look at the TTV (thermal time valve) make sure it has 12V from when the ignition is tuned on.

had a similar problem on mine. whipped the carb off and all the vac pipes were in the wrong order swapped em round and problem was gone :hugegrin:

Ok guys,

Had a look at the internet for as much information as I could find. Found this on another forum. They may drive Golfs but don't hold that against them: http://www.clubgti.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124945

So, after reading through the closest fault to what I had was the o-ring in the inlet manifold. However testing the expansion element seemed cheaper so tried that first. Pulled the element off the carb and tested it in boiling water. Unfortunately it worked fine.

So, went to VW and bought a new o-ring and inlet manifold gasket and spent yesterday stripping it down. see pictures below of what I found.

You'll see that the oring has closed up almost completely. With the oring and gasket costing just over £10 it was well worth doing.

However, took the car out this morning and the problem has not gone away. :dash: Least it gave me a chance to clean up my inlet manifold.

Next: temperature sensors and 3/4pt unit.

Hi Guys,
TTV & idle over run valve:
These should both get 12v when the ignition is on, and there should be an audiable 'click' from the engine bay when the key is turned.
Checked the TTV and idle over run just now with engine cold and ignition on. The Idle overrun is getting 12V but the TTV is only getting 0.1V. Does anyone know if these are fused separately or am I about to do a rather large re-wiring job?

i never got overly involvd with pierburgs, but assuming it is meant to have 12v at it, and not an earth connection, have you tried just conecting 12v to it with a bit of wire to see what happens?
