Magically started working again today. I checked all the stuff mentioned and couldn't see any issues. Either I inadvertently freed something up, or something was fozen stuck and has now thawed. Thanks for all the help and advice on this everyone. Much appreciated.

Sounds like the water level has dropped, and now its likely to be air locked.Try and find the source of the leak and rectify it, set the heater controls to hot, drain the system, then refill the expansion bottle, remove the top hose at the radiator and fill the system from there until water starts to spill out, when it does reconnect the hose and the problem should be sorted. Remember to check the coolant level once the engine is cold.

Don't ask me....it was like that when i got here !
