Changing Rocker cover gasket

Post by philiano »

Hi all
I've bought a rocker cover gasket 2day, and I'm thinking of changing it tomorrow if the weather here isn't too arctic.
Is it just a case of whipping the cover off, and getting the old gasket out (being ultra careful) and putting the new one in? A friend told me to smear vasoline on it before closing it up.
Is it this straight forward? If so I'm gonna attempt it tomorrow

Also should say its a '91 GT2

Did you buy the rubber gasket kit from VW?

If so you will need to remove the old studs and fit the studs with the ones from the kit.

Never bothered putting anything special on the gasket.

Straight forward job, make sure you fit the new studs if you got the VW rubber one. I would advise to get a couple of spare 10mm nuts in case you drop 1 or 2, saves any heartache if yiu have them to hand (I didn't!!!).

How much does a VW rubber gasket set cost? Does anyone have the part number also?

They cost about £16 from VW, and that includes the new studs.
One other thing I would recommend is giving the rocker cover a good clean up with paraffin whilst it is off and clean out the breather. Would be a good time to give it a coat of paint, 2 jobs with one throw!

is there a website where you can order stuff directly through volkswagen for this sort of stuff? or do you have to go to the garage itself??? also does anyone know if / where i can get a new bolt for my rocker cover, the whole thing, not just the nut, the nut on one of the eight (typically) is totally and utterly seized to the bolt so ive unscrewed the whole thing from the cylinder head, but still cant get the old nut off of the bolt......
