Cleaning my Carb

Post by philiano »

Hi all

I've been getting a weird cutting out problem with my new '91 GT2. It'll run fine one minute, and the next, it'll cough, and die when the car stops. Today it tried dying out while I was cruising along a dual carriageway.
I'm thinking it's a Carb problem. as it only started when I fitted a new air filter (was missing when I bought it) and continued doing it after I took it back out.
Are Carbs easy to clean? I've seen carb cleaner, but does it involve removing the Carb to do it? I know I sound like a noob, but it's my first classic car, and I want it looking and running perfectly.

Thanx
Phil

it depends on which carb u have on the car that determines how hard it is to strip and clean,i.e the origenal peirburg or the after market weber ive never striped the pierburg but the weber i found really easy especially because it doesnt have all the extra vacuum pipes and water connections. just make sure EVERYTHING goes back together the same way u took it apart. and mark up any screws or count the amount of turns to remove them as its critical to put it back the same. chances are there is crap in the carb as therewas no filter in there and carb cleaner is good stuff ive used it before but petrol and an air line is just as good.

I dont mind project cars but I HATE SANDING!!!

ok, so I've been searching the net, and I'm thinking the waxstat is busted. Anyone know how much they cost?
Seems like the car runs ok when it's cold, but once it warms up, its stalling.
